In case you haven’t figured out from either the text or the score, I really loved Prince of Persia Classic. It was more than just your typical “enhancement” we find in so many other XBLA titles, yet it remained totally true to the source material while cleverly working in a few elements from the more recent console games. This is a game that transcends generations, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few father-son duels taking place for the rights to the 360 controller. And who knows, with the ghost feature and Time Trial mode, dad might just have a chance to win for once.
in all however, it is hard to complain about what is easily the
best looking Xbox Live Arcade game yet and quite possibly the most
well rounded one too. Whether you care about saving princesses or
not, Prince of Persia is a game of royal calibre and deserves a
place among the elite must have titles available on Xbox Live Arcade.
Prince of Persia Classic is certainly short, but it's oh so sweet. This is one of the best games released on XBLA to date and the template all future enhanced classic games should follow. If it weren't for the brevity of the experience, POP Classic would be, well, an instant classic. Still, if you can accept that you won't get more than a couple hours enjoyment from the $10 download, do yourself a favor and check out Prince of Persia Classic. It's one of the elite among Xbox Live Arcade games.
Prince of Persia Classic sets the bar high for what a classic game remake should look like. Not only is this one of the most exciting Xbox Live Arcade games currently available, it's also one of the best looking. Regardless of the price, this is one adventure you should think about going on!
I really enjoyed this return to what the initial PoP provided, which was pure platform enjoyment. Two problems came up, though: One is that there’s not really a ton of gameplay here, especially if you take the time to map out the best path through each stage ahead of a serious playthrough. Once you get through the game, the only reason to play it is to speed up your completion time so you can brag via the in-game leaderboards.
Regardless of whether you've never played the classic before or you're a seasoned veteran, Prince of Persia Classic is definitely worth checking out. The graphics alone are worth the price of admission, but beyond the visuals this is still a compelling action game with plenty of worthwhile puzzles and a whole lot of combat. The original Prince of Persia is one of the best games of all time, and this enhanced remake only improves on the classic.
Prince of Persia once served as a great example of how a simple good idea and solid execution can amount to an immensely fun product. Now, this iteration of the classic game shows that with some love and polishing, these old favorite games of ours really do stand the test of time, and even outperform some new games. The HD coating may not soak all the way to the bones of this game, but the time-tested gameplay outshines even the highest polygon-counts.
Prince of Persia Classic is a game that many patrons of Planet Xbox 360’s forums have been looking forward to since it was originally announced for the Arcade. I’m happy to report that this is one of the better retro revamp titles to come along. Despite that, many gamers will have to give this game a second thought before spending the 800 points, due to the low replay value and lack of multiplayer. That being said, fans of the platforming genre should be pleased with this Arcade title.
The only thing that's disappointing about this version of Prince of Persia is that the original game doesn't appear to be part of the package. Sure, its punishing difficulty might not hold up all that well today, but its inclusion would have been nice, if only to show how great of a job Gameloft did on Prince of Persia Classic. Other developers should take note: This is how you bring a classic game to a downloadable service.
I remember going back to the original Prince of Persia after playing through The Sands of Time and thinking “how the heck did this become a classic?” After playing it on XBLA, though, I recognize what makes it an entertaining experience. It’s a clever and challenging platformer that tests you on your ability to get from Point A to Point B as fast as possible. The controls are still a bit awkward, but the graphical enhancements are a definite plus (a rarity for the “updated” XBLA classics).
Prince of Persia Classic is one of the better “updated classics” on the Xbox Live Arcade, and this is made possible by the impressive visuals and the time-tested (albeit somewhat frustrating) gameplay.
Many modern remakes of video games fall into one of two categories. They are either drastically changed from the source material that they almost count as different games, or they attempt and stick to the old formula yet turn out to be soulless imitations. Prince of Persia Classic is too reminiscent of the original to belong in the first category. So, if past versions didn't click with you, this likely won't either. It's also too well crafted to fall in the second category; the charm and addictiveness is not only still there, it has been refined through slicker controls and added modes. Aside from the aforementioned glitches, this is the greatest overall rendition of the first Prince of Persia. If you are itching to experience it again, or if you're a newcomer wanting to see what the fuss is about, it makes for one of the best deals on Xbox Live Arcade.
With many companies choosing to release frankly embarrassing versions of their retro titles on the XBLA, Prince of Persia Classic truly is a shining light and a great example of how companies should treat the games we loved all those years ago. Sure it has a few niggles that could have been ironed out with a few more weeks of work but the core gameplay is top quality, and in the end that's what counts the most. So the final question would have to be; is it worth 800 MS Points? You’re damn right it is!
Whether or not you’ll find yourself enjoying this game really comes down to answering a single question: would you enjoy playing a game in which most of the challenge came from trying to beat your best time through the game? The game has online leaderboards that let you compare your times against those of other gamers, if that helps to provide you additional motivation. Another thing to take into consideration is that the controls can be a little frustrating at times. The prince’s moves have long animated sequences that can make it hard to judge exactly where he’ll stop or land. A little misjudgment on your part can kill your time in a level. If this all doesn't sound like your idea of a good time, then it probably won't be. Otherwise you'll probably enjoy this nice update of one of the true classics of computer gaming.
Nevertheless, for the short time that the game does last it is an example of how Live Arcade titles should be done and how an old game can be refurbished, yet still retain a nostalgic edge to please all types of players. Pound for pound, Microsoft point for Microsoft point, you’re investing in the best Live Arcade title around.
Although exploration is the core of the game—and like every game in this series, the best part—combat happens frequently and will likely be the main cause of frustration. Still, if you can stick it out through the hard bits, Prince of Persia Classic is definitely a worthwhile download. It’s a welcome walk down memory lane—when it’s not causing shouts of pain and anguish.
You’ll undoubtedly appreciate Sands of Time more after completing Classic. Overall, the gameplay is simplistic, but still a fun experience. As a puzzle game you’d expect more variation in traps as you near the end, but that doesn’t happen. With a relatively short campaign, Time Trial, and Survival mode as your only replay options, there’s not much here. Hardcore fans of the Prince of Persia series might want to pick this one up if you’re curious as to how the series began, but don’t expect a stellar experience like Sands of Time.
There are several reasons to spend the 800 points for the Prince of Persia Classic, most notably are the graphics, but the gameplay is the truest reason to download this game. Even though the hour-long aspect of the game could hinder replayability, you will from time to time wish to save the fair princess from the dastardly Grand Vizier. Where else can you set down for an hour and enjoy the swashbuckling of good versus evil in the truest sense of the word?
Although not perfect, it is still an enjoyable game despite it carrying over the frustrations of the original as well as being easier to complete in normal mode. Things like running through a seemingly clear area only to get sliced by giant blades cunningly concealed in the environment or mistiming jumps and falling to your doom can really make you want to throw your controller across the room after a while and as mentioned above some sword fights can be a little frustrating, saying that it does have a ‘just one more go’ element to it and I found it hard to put down until I finished it. If you enjoyed the original, this remake is certainly worth a look.
It's all good news. Games like Prince of Persia and the PlayStation Store's forthcoming Super Stardust HD are strong evidence that classic gaming is finally getting the respect it deserves. Gameloft is to be congratulated and rewarded with millions of our Microsoft points for a remake that beautifully celebrates a genuine gaming legend. Add it to your Live Arcade collection alongside Jetpac Refuelled, Geometry Wars and Pac-Man Championship Edition as the most essential examples of 'retro evolved'.
Prince of Persia Classic is a step in the right direction for the way that classic games ought to be remade. While there are aspects of the game that are still ridiculously frustrating, it’s a better game than it was all that time ago. We would have preferred to see some more refinement and it would have been nice if the game had some things that were explained better but over all it’s a solid effort. In the least, the presentation is second to none. Still, unless you’ve played before and you know what you’re getting yourself into, we suggest to you be cautious. The first level is not an indicator for the rest of the game.
For fans of the original, Classic is a beautiful remake with a handful of surprises - it's just a shame that the controls are no way near as fluid as the Prince's new moves.
