Through and through I am thoroughly surprised and amazed by Pure. Disney have done a fantastic job, and nobody would have expected it of them. If you’re looking for a slightly challenging game, covered in tasty graphics sauce, that is a bit of a change from skateboarding or motorbiking, check it out. There are plenty of features, a handful of game modes, a nice collection of tracks, and the online play works as one would hope. You won’t be disappointed.
All together, I absolutely loved Pure, and while I've played a fair share of decent off road racers in the past couple years, nothing compares to Pure in my opinion. I'm absolutely looking forward to a sequel, and I hope more players become aware of this release so we can get that sequel locked in relatively soon. Pick this one up, whether you've heard about it or not, I can't imagine you'd be disappointed.
Pure is definitely a sleeper hit. The game is well done and not many people seem to be aware of it. Give it a rental for sure – you won’t be disappointed.
Pure is one of those games that manages to be fun, addictive and fresh all at once. It has a fantastic ATV builder that is one of the strengths of the game.
The Review Busters
Pure delivers a arcade like ATV game that has it all. After playing the game for three days straight I found the time to put it down and write this review. Racing games in general come out almost every month; none of them really come close to what Pure offers. New and old fans of ATV games should pick this game up.
Totally Gaming Network
Overall, Pure is a lot of fun to play and that is what is important. The graphics are spectacular and it can be a wild ride trying to pull off some of these stunts while trying to land correctly at the same time so you don’t crash. You seem to be able to earn the Achievements at a nice pace which should keep players engaged as they try to pull off that ultimate combo to unlock that next achievement. The only thing I would change if this game has a sequel is to have more modes available. Other than that this is a great off road racing game and definitely a game that everyone should experience.
Xbox World Australia (XWA)
What else is left to say? PURE achieves everything it sets out to do. It offers up some of the coolest looking tracks (with extremely detailed bikes) in a racing game on the Xbox 360 yet. The controls are tight and extremely responsive and it all comes together to create some genuinely hairy, action packed racing. Sure, I've nitpicked by pointing out the lack of a replay mode, and the riders are all a bit Disney-ish "High School Musical” but that's easy to look past. Next to FlatOut Ultimate Carnage, PURE is the racing highlight for me from the past 12 months. There aren't many racing games that kept me interested long enough to aim for first in every event but PURE was one of them and comes highly recommended.
With all that Pure has to offer from its comprehensive garage to lengthy career, it still lacks a key feature. Split-screen multiplayer is absent, countered by full online support for up to 16 players. That omission, coupled with a few tough-as-nails races in the later stages of the campaign, provide the game's two sticking points. Anything sweet, however, ends up being somewhat sticky and that's a small price to pay for Pure's fantastic gameplay.
Official XBox Magazine
We can forgive that Pure’s ethnically diverse but otherwise generic characters spout unoriginal, repetitive quips, and we got used to the bikes’ droning engines, which sound like a hornet’s nest filled with angry lawnmowers. Honestly, they were minor trade-offs for the lush visuals and snappy controls. Besides, we were having too much fun to care.
Beyond those last two points, it’s pretty hard to find reasons to dislike Pure. It looks gorgeous, it has an addictive ‘one more turn’ feel to it, and it has a truly awesome soundtrack packed full of some seriously phat beats. At the end of the day, Pure is a shinning example of an arcade experience done right and it delivers on this with big air, big thrills, and a whole lotta dirt. Motorstorm 2 had better have some tricks up its sleeve to beat this feisty contender.
It’s hard to imagine a gamer not getting at least a few jollies form zipping around in Pure; and I don’t mean just racing genre gamers. That’s ‘E’ for Everyone– just like Pure’s ESRB rating. Moto-heads and racing nuts should be all over this one, as should fans of all games extreme in nature.
Sure, more tracks would be nice and bike customization needed work. When it comes right down to it, though, Pure has some of the best racing action we've seen all year. The throttling gameplay, gorgeous presentation and sweet multiplayer options make it a ride you cannot miss.
MS Xbox World
Pure is sheer unadulterated fun. The game offers breathtaking graphics and addictive gameplay, combined with a decent set of single and multiplayer modes. The game is probably one of the best arcade/extreme sports style racers to hit the Xbox 360 this generation, and is in my opinion a game that must be played. Do NOT let this game pass you by under the radar, Pure is truly a great experience.
There are only a few negative points to touch on, like the lack of split-screen multiplayer and somewhat long load times, but to complain much would be nitpicking. The only thing that gets in the way of gameplay is the occasional spot where going off the road a tiny bit might end up crashing you, but it only happens from time to time. There are twelve locations and over forty tracks and events to compete in, a traditional World Tour mode, which serves as a plotless campaign to the game, and an amazingly in-depth vehicle customization screen. Pure offers a massive amount of content for the money, and the online multiplayer, which features up to sixteen players, is as intense as any other racing game’s this generation. I cannot recommend Pure highly enough, and think that everyone who considers themselves a fan of racing or extreme sports should pick it up, you won’t be disappointed.
We defy you not to enjoy Pure. In an age where simulation reigns supreme, Pure's over the top arcade fun is a refreshing change of pace. Somehow Black Rock has managed to make a game that is infectious, spreading the joy to all who touch it, even to onlookers who gather around the TV in awe at the incredible visuals. If you enjoy a good racer Pure is a no brainer. If you think you don't like racing gamers, Pure could be the game to change your mind.
„Wow – Pure ist richtig geil geworden“. Anders lässt sich dieses Spiel einfach nicht beschreiben, denn die Mischung aus waghalsigen Stunts und dem schnellen Fahrgefühl macht von der ersten Minute an Spaß und süchtig. Dank der der großen Anzahl an Strecken, den vielen Tuning-Möglichkeiten und der grandiosen Grafik sollte man nicht lange zögern und sich Pure sofort zulegen.
Inside Hotwire 3D
Despite the game being associated with the SSX titles, we can’t deny the fact that Pure is an incredible reproduction of extreme sport. The game provides high adrenaline entertainment with its raucous music and impressive trick system. The action is very intense and at the same time, unbelievably smooth. What makes Pure so interesting is the intuitive risk-versus-rewards system that has you instituting decisions on the fly. Not to mention the controls are very accessible, too, which will suit both casual gamers and sim players alike. Creating your very own ATV with the ability to jack up its performance is half the fun. But the real excitement stems from being able to land those outrageous tricks! Thanks to the game’s visceral presentation, you’ll definitely feel the weight and the thrilling sensation of what ATV racing is all about. Pure comes out to be an incredibly exciting off-road package – purely fun and purely addicting.
Pure is an adrenaline shot in a box, a quick paced action packed racer with streamlined gameplay and excellent production values. This is the perfect game to pick up if you have been looking for a decent, fast paced off-road racer. Even though Pure only features the four-wheeled quad they pack in one hell of a ride. You can forget about the ATV games of the past, Pure is the new standard in off-road quad racing.
If you can deal with some minor shortcomings, Pure delivers exactly what the title promises: pure gameplay. Almost all aspects of the racing, tricking, physics and ATV creation come together seamlessly and the result is a rock-solid racer that aims to please and thrill in the same sweep. Even if your interest in off-road racing is only passing, do yourself a favour and invest in Pure because it's bold and brilliant fun. It really is as simple as that.
GamingHeaven / DriverHeaven
All in all Pure delivers a fun and ultimately rewarding race game with extreme sports elements. It will certainly not appeal to the simulation style race fans out there, but for everyone else there is certainly enjoyment to get from playing the game. The graphics on both console versions really are very well coded and it can look extremely impressive, especially when you are performing stunts and watching the ground coming up slowly below you. Highly recommended.
Planet Xbox 360
Pure is, without a doubt, the most unique racer to release in the second half of 2008. Forget driving cars and trucks; pick up Pure and kick up mud with your own custom ATV. There aren’t any better options when it comes to off-road racing on the Xbox 360.
When it comes down to it, Pure is fun. It's simple, it's effective, and it perfectly captures that "just one more race" factor. While it may be too simple for some, most players will find it to be a thoroughly enjoyable arcade ATV racing game. While it does have a few faults, such as collision detection problems, an annoying soundtrack, mediocre online play and a strangely complex ATV building system, the core strengths of Pure far outweigh those problems. If you liked games like Motorstorm, ATV Offroad Fury, SSX or even Tony Hawk in its glory days, you really owe it to yourself to at least try Pure.
Also: Guten Flug!
Pure delivers an outrageous, arcadey off-road racing experience with style and slickness. The controls are intuitive, the tracks are pure eye candy and the tricks are so crazy and over-the-top that you’ll find yourself gasping with glee when you land your first Lazy Girl. Although it’s a blast to play, it’s not the deepest game out there, and we found ourselves wishing for just a few more modes, tracks and options to round out the experience. But overall, Pure is just pure fun, and that’s what it’s all about.
Pure delivers on the promise of fast thrills and fun, so the very few minor issues seem non-existent. A definite recommendation for fans of both racing and arcade-style games.
PURE is a great game that lets you experience extreme ATV racing that is challenging and strategic, but also fun and forgiving. The boost and trick balance keeps you thinking while blasting around the tracks and the bike customization should keep the people that like to tweak their bike setups busy. The game also has a decent amount of tracks and challenges, plus online play to keep you busy. The only minor issues I have with the game are that tracks start to look the same, since a lot of them have a lot of shades of green and brown in them, but I guess that is to be expected in a ATV racing game. Also, PURE gives you a decent amount of background story about the riders you can choose from, but doesn’t really elaborate on their story beyond that. It would’ve been cool if they had cut scenes with more story revealed as you progressed through the game.
Black Rock and Disney have created a promising new franchise with Pure, but the game lacks some content and variation here and there. Nonetheless Pure delivers rock solid off-road arcade action as we've rarely seen. Motorstorm: Pacific Rift will have a hard job to beat this quadracer and dirt eaters with a PS3 are facing a difficult choice.
Armchair Empire, The
Pure is an enjoyable racing game even when an attempt to squeeze in one more stunt results in a pin-wheeling ragdoll rider and dropping a couple of positions. The visceral appeal of driving really fast and performing all manner of impossible gyrations is strong enough to make Pure a gotta play title.
There isn’t much I can find fault with in this game. It’s certainly one of the best racing games out there and possibly the best in its little subgenre as well. I do wish there were a few extra modes, or more to flesh out the single player offerings outside of the World Tour, which I found to be a tad lacking in the depth department. At the end of the day, these are just minor complaints in a sea of great design decisions, amazing visuals, and flat out fun ATV racing. I hope to see more from this franchise, because I see a great deal of potential in this title alone. So, should you check Pure out? By all means, give it a shot. There’s nothing else quite like it.
GBase - The Gamer's Base
Game Informer Magazine
Pure doesn’t present the deepest pool out there. But with a game this fun, you should dive in nonetheless. The game achieves its core focus, taking you along for a thrilling ride.
Overall, Pure is a well-rounded, cleverly designed and spirited attempt to capture the high-octane world of quadbike racing. Highly recommended for the long summer evenings coming up, and ideal to be enjoyed on a sofa in close proximity to beer and barbecued food.
To be honest I wasn’t really sure what to expect of Pure, however having now played it I have to say that I am very impressed, so much effort has been put in to the game and the result is an all out excellent racing experience that keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way to the finish line.
Pure doesn’t change the extreme sports racing genre in any major way, but it does give hope to those of us who have been patiently waiting for a substitute for the SSX games. Pure is the new kid on the block, and if given a sequel or two to improve, it could grow into a brilliant beast of a man.
Thrilling on the ground, downright heart-stopping in the air, and beautiful throughout, Pure's a blast from start to finish. A career mode would've gone further than the game's "World Tour" in fully eliminating repetitiveness, but Black Rock has otherwise built a real winner here.
As the name would imply, Pure wins because it sticks with only the most important facets of ATV racing: crazy handling and absurd, gravity-defying stunts. Its stellar visuals (exemplified by the glittering glacier track set in New Zealand) are simply icing on a cake of solid gameplay that rarely falters in providing the basic racing game essentials. Fans of the genre will undoubtedly appreciate the variety of gameplay and replayability offered by the multiple routes through each track while the uninitiated can easily acclimate to the simple control scheme. Pure isn't flawless, but it's the closest an ATV racer has gotten yet.
Ultimately Pure, at its core, is one of the most fun games I've picked up in this genre in a long time, and with the overall consensus so far being in the absolute positive, it's highly likely we'll be seeing this series manifest itself down (excuse the pun) the track for future quad-bike high-flying arcade awesomeness.
Video Games Daily
At worst, this is one of the best rental options this year. It doesn't have the depth or longevity of the big simulation racers but for sheer hair-raising off road action, a new franchise is born. Grow a mullet, get some kahunas and change your name to Cletus - this is grievous bodily petrol. Supped up lawnmowers have never been so much fun!
Pure is a perfectly polished and presented package. It offers extreme-tricking and adrenaline-fuelled racing and does it in a refreshing and challenging way. Without the online options its lifespan may be questionable, but essentially this is just Pure fun.
PSW (Playstation World Magazine UK)
Nonetheless, Pure is a visually stunning, utterly playable, totally loveable racing game that rewards time invested in it with ridiculous feats of agility and gorgeous, turf-destroying races. Pure is one of the most playable, fun, quasi-arcade racers on the market, but it’s linear compared to Burnout Paradise. Want a muddier, messier, more brutal racer? Pure will certainly satisfy that primal urge.
There's little doubt in our mind that PURE beats MotorStorm: Pacific Rift's apparent lacklustre experience, and that's thanks mainly to the refined tricks system, the Freestyle mode, and the sixteen player online gameplay. Whereas Turok struggled in the murkiness of blandness and unoriginality, PURE offers a mud-slipping, cliff-jumping thrill ride that has come out of nowhere.
On reflection, though - in terms of modes, the number of tracks and gameplay variety - Pure does come up just a fraction too short to warrant dishing out a higher score. It feels like an incredible platform to build on, in the same way that Burnout set Criterion on a path to greatness. As much as the wonderful production values and refined trick-based gameplay deserve massive respect and critical acclaim, there's a sense that's there's more to come from Pure before it becomes the definite article. As a starting point for a successful brand, though, Black Rock has totally nailed it, and this represents a hugely promising effort. Stomach churning insanity doesn't get any better right now.
Cheat Code Central
There’s a lot to love about Pure, but at the same time it can be hard to shake the feeling that something’s missing. At its best, Pure is a game that puts you in the middle of the action and exhilarates you with fantastic racing fun. But it’s not going to last you particularly long even with the multiplayer aspect, and I can’t help but wish that Pure weren’t a $60 game. There are other, deeper, and ultimately more satisfying racing games out there. But for a pure, pick-up-and-play sense of speed and fun, Pure is hard to beat.
The Video Game Critic
If there's one aspect of Pure I didn't care for, it's the ATV customization system. While it allows you to tweak every tiny part, it's very tedious and hardly worth the effort (use the "auto-build" option instead). I enjoyed working my way through the single-player World Tour mode, but my friends lamented the lack of a split-screen mode. Chaotic racers like this are tailor-made for head-to-head action, and that on-line multiplayer is not going to cut it. Then again, the tracks would have been hard to follow on the split-screen, considering how they tend to branch so much. Pure is not a showcase title like Motor Storm, but it's definitely worthwhile on the strength of its satisfying single-player experience.
Computer Bild Spiele
If you were desperate for a quick fix racing game then Pure will fill your needs for a long weekend, but don’t expect to be playing it much after that, it’s just too short and doesn’t have enough game modes to keep you interested for long periods of time. There is massive potential for a kick-ass sequel though, and some of those tracks are fabulous to race around.
