Still, Rise of Nightmare is an intriguing game that's worth dusting off your Kinect for. It's a little clumsy but it will get you involved like no other horror title can.
Rise of Nightmares really loses points when it comes to controls. The unnatural and awkward control leaves a lot of room for improving. Another downside would be the price tag. For $49.99 you'll get a game that has a pretty low replay value. On the other hand, it is a lot of fun to play, and a lot more fun to watch the player. The story will keep you craving for more, and the wide diversity of weapons provides new ways to slash, hack, dismember and decapitate the mechanically-altered undead. So, my advice when playing this game is to gather your friends, turn up the volume and have a blast! An old Roman saying goes: “Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s”. Well, Sega has created the first horror FPS game on Kinect, and we must them give credit to that. It is not perfect, but if Sega manages to refine and enhance it, this may very well become a new chapter in the gaming era.
Gameplay (Benelux)

Overall, Sega’s Rise of Nightmares is a wonderful attempt at creating a creepy game for mature gamers using the Kinect peripheral. The storyline and atmosphere, as well as the visuals and sound, manage to create a spooky experience that should please horror fans. Unfortunately the unnatural controls take away from the gameplay and leave you with many frustrating moments. I find it hard to recommend purchasing Rise of Nightmares as inevitably the problematic controls will likely be difficult to overcome. That being said, horror fans with a Kinect may want to give this a look.
All in all this Rise of Nightmares is a fascinating experiment that is certainly worth experiencing, but as game it falls short. Certain parts of gameplay are just clumsy, like the navigating, and more interesting tryouts seem to fit better in a game for the youngest amongst us. A gathering of good and mostly less succesful parts, so to speak, and certain crazy scientists would be able to fabricate a solid monster out of this. Let's hope that a lot of lessons are learnt from this sp that adult games won't be dead and burried from now on. A better sequel please?

I’ll hand it to SEGA: Rise of Nightmares is an ambitious title, and it’s even functional for the most part (aside from the most basic of actions, walking). But ambition and basic functionality alone don’t make a game good. The ironic thing about Rise of Nightmares is that the control scheme is so basic it comes off feeling like a game for kids, when it tries so damn hard not to be. Even if you like the novelty of chopping off undead heads longer than I did, a bad horror game is a bad horror game. And Rise of Nightmares is a monster.
