SST is a decent foray into the tennis genre, but rather than rely on the basic game, throws lots of diversity into the mix with its mini games and challenges. For me this worked really well as the additional games added a lot of personality to proceedings as well as provided some much loved nostalgia. If you are looking for a decent party game or have a fondness for SEGA characters then SST is well worthy of your time. If you are just looking for a game to while away the hours then I suggest renting first.

Wer alleine gegen die K.I.

I've been pretty hard on Sonic and many of his compatriots in recent years. Okay, so the gang isn't exactly on par with Super Smash Bros. in terms of star power. However, this new tennis title manages to present gamers with some solid, casual sports entertainment.

This is one of those games that everyone is going to get something different out of, and provided you're not expecting anything like a serious tennis sim then I think most gamers will be pleasantly surprised overall. Despite a couple of dodgy missions and a couple of areas where the IP isn't exploited to its full potential, there's some lovely gaming stuff in here whether you're a Sega obsessive or not.

Sega Superstars Tennis is a strange beast to review. Some of the themed games work well, for example we enjoyed the nods to Virtua-Cop, Golden Axe and dare we say it, even some of the Sonic the Hedgehog games held our attention well. Other themed events like Out-Run didn’t work so well or offer enough to even warrant their inclusion. If you’re a fan of Sega though you’ll simply love what Sumo have done with Superstars and the online tennis matches will certainly keep you coming back for more once you have lapped up the Superstars mode.

All told, SEGA Superstars Tennis is a dream for SEGA fanboys everywhere. It’s an entertaining romp down memory lane for anyone who’s ever owned a Saturn or Dreamcast. The minigames are a great little waste of time as well, and rarely feel old. Ironically, it’s the actual tennis mechanics that really weigh the title down. The simplified gameplay is almost too watered down, taking most of the skill out of the game and leaving players feeling like they’re just going through the motions. Casual gamers looking to relive the days of gaming past will be hard pressed to find a reason to stay away from SEGA Superstars Tennis. Everyone else will be hard pressed to find a reason to stick around.

In the end, Sega Superstars Tennis is a pleasant surprise. Those thinking the little blue guy had nothing left are sorely mistaken, as he does serve up a pretty good game of tennis. Fans of either classic Sega or Virtua Tennis will immediately feel comfortable with this title and find more than enough to satisfy them. Others may become bored with the repetitive mini-games. Regardless, Sega Superstars Tennis is worth a look because although for some the fun may not last, there is still a good time to be had.

If you are a SEGA nut like me, you will adore many aspects found in SEGA Superstars Tennis. You will also leave the experience however wanting more in both single player and online. Although a lovely premise harking to heartfelt memories gone by, it fails to live up to my desires, which is a shame when it is so very close to doing so. The core mechanics are there, the atmosphere is there in the bucket load, but the total experience I was looking for alas has slipped by.

Sega Superstars Tennis is by no means amazing, but it should manage to satisfy Sega and tennis fans alike.

In all honesty, the simplification of the controls and hit-miss nature of the superstar mode mean that Sega Superstar Tennis isn’t quite as good as the tennis masterclass that was Virtua Tennis 3. Multiplayer games with friends are always good fun, but I can’t see this taking over from Mario Kart or Pro Evolution Soccer in most people’s lives. However, if you’re the kind of person who died a little when the Dreamcast failed, can hum Magical Sound Shower in their sleep and know exactly what I’m on about when I mention UK:Resistance, then you’ll get a huge kick out of the sheer amount of fan service on display. It’s a glimpse of what a world would be like should Sega have managed to keep their finances in check. A happy world, with blue skies… and a competent game of tennis to boot.

For Sega fans though, this is something of a nice little collectable game of tennis that will bring a smile of recognition and reminiscence to your face unless you’ve got a heart of stone. Tennis purists might scoff at the abject cartoonishness of it all, but in reality there’s not really that much difference between the tennis dynamics here or in Virtua Tennis (except Andy Murray wouldn’t be capable of firing off a volley of bananas to defeat an opponent). All in all this is a pleasing little game dusted with a fair amount of addictiveness, and with a bucketload of little quirks and depths to keep you playing for quite some time.

It could’ve been better, but on the same token, it could’ve been a lot worse. The online isn’t perfect with lag and a lack of players to play with, but it sure can be fun when everything clicks. The best part about Sega Superstars Tennis is being able to play against your friend with Sonic and your favorite Sega characters.

And that's the thing: At one point in time, all of these characters and franchises were just as beloved as Nintendo's by Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast diehards, and while it's always tempting with these games to demand even more of that delicious fan service (and there's definitely more room here for expanded content), those Sega fans are the guys and girls who will be most pleased with this game. It's just a shame that, due to Sega's mismanagement of its properties over the last decade or so, Superstars Tennis comes too late to fully resonate with today's gaming audience

Worth Playing
Ultimately, Sega Superstars Tennis is the type of game that even nostalgia buffs will find difficult to love. The courts are fun, fanciful, and take you back to games that you forgot that you loved. The music is equally good, with tracks from classic games that are sure to bring the memories flooding back. The game is even fun at first, until you hit the curse of repetitive gameplay and inconsistent AI, which is where it all falls apart. Games are designed, first and foremost, to be fun and to keep you coming back for more. Sadly, this title is so frustrating that there will likely come a time when you are cheated out of a match, and you'll remove it from the disc tray, never to play it again. Even with its new discount price, this is a game for only the most hardcore Sega and tennis fans, and even those folks would likely be better served elsewhere. A lot like Anna Kournikova's career, this one starts out promising, but flames out pretty quickly.

Keine verbissenen Grundlinienduelle, kein langweiliges Serve-and-Volley.

The real problem with Sega Superstars Tennis is really that it is aimed at kids who are too young to remember most of these characters and casual gamers who could care less. Gamers who fondly remember these classic characters are not likely to sit around and play minigames and mediocre arcade tennis for hours on end.

UOL Jogos

Avid Gamer
We may seem overly harsh but while SEGA Superstars Tennis is generally a well polished game, it falls into the trap of resting on its laurels. It eventually becomes a grind, a repetitive experience which begins as addictive fun but becomes clear in intensions. It could do better, but again it could have done a lot worse.

GameSpy
Sega Superstars Tennis isn't a bad game, it's just that it offers little to differentiate it from Virtua Tennis 3 outside of the inclusion of classic Sega characters. The controls may have been simplified a bit, but this essentially boils the tennis experience down to a war of attrition where victory is decided by how long you are willing to volley the ball back and forth. It's hardly a compelling reason to shell out more cash for a game that falls short of the pre-existing VT3.

PlayDevil
"SEGA Superstars Tennis" is by no means a disaster, its just pretty average as a game.
The controls are too simplistic, yet far too difficult at the same time. The graphics are average, the sound is like a high-quality N64 game, with little variation in speech samples, and the choice of Sega games is sometimes questionable. The core gameplay and Superstars mode, however, are solid, and the multiplayer (if you can find anyone) is also fun to play.
Overall, if you have young (or older) kids, they may enjoy the game, even if the characters and levels are out of pretty random games.

Game Revolution
Better yet, what about just a compilation of Sega classics? You know, something that usually cost half the price of most full retail games? Wait a minute, why am I playing a tennis game anyway?! And that’s exactly what will be going through your head. If the actual tennis wasn’t tedious and mundane, you wouldn’t have to ask whether Sega Superstars Tennis was just used to justify a reunion of Sega characters, or the other way around. Either way, the dream of a Sega-filled game that actually lives up to the legacy of Sega remains to be fulfilled.

The Video Game Critic
It's impossible to get the ball past a speed demon like Sonic, so you only score when he inexplicably "gives up" on the shot! And couldn't Sega have programmed more than one reaction per character? Talk about repetitive! The two-player mode is better, but still mediocre. The music tends to "cut out" between points, and it's really annoying. I was expecting Sega Superstars to be shallow, but I wasn't prepared for such a complete meltdown. If you want to know how far Sega has fallen, look no further than this game.
