The world view and ideas put forth in this Syndicate reboot are decidedly well-worn territory, but it's still a world worth exploring, mostly thanks to Starbreeze's continued gift for crafting first-person action games that don't feel like just another Shooter of the Day experience.
There are sure to be players who wont give Syndicate a chance based on the baggage it carries as a reboot to a cult hit. But Starbreeze has taken the fiction of the original and made a smart, slick, tactically engaging shooter, aided by a strong sense of presentation, great music, and good voice acting. It's not a radical evolution of the futuristic shooter, but Syndicate is an uncommonly well-assembled torch-bearer for the cyberpunk legacy that spawned it, and there are worse futures to look forward to.
Syndicate isn’t just your run-of-the-mill shooter – which is hardly surprising since Starbreeze is behind it – instead what you have is an empowering shooter set in a far from idyllic futuristic world that puts the power of technology at your fingertips. Once you’ve finished with the relatively short single-player campaign, prepare to lose a lot of time in the game’s addictive and surprisingly deep co-op. Starbreeze’s Syndicate isn’t the RTS you may all remember, but it’s certainly an FPS you won’t forget any time soon.
Overall, Syndicate is definately a game worth checking out, and I'm ashamed to say that if I had not been asked to do a review for this title, I would have happily not looked at the game twice. DON'T be the fool I could've been and give this game a go! The campaign is not painfully long and not too short, the visuals are sweet, the story is interesting and keeps you wanting more! The co-op is an absolute blast and very much alive with plenty of experienced and skilled players filling the lobbies up in no time.
If you love co-op it’s a must buy, if you like single player FPS it’s a must buy, if you like futuristic dystopias it’s a must buy… just buy it already. I’m tired. I was up all night on the co-op.
Syndicate is a game with a lot of good, but also some disappointing points. The singleplayer campaign is held up by the shooter qualities - but then mostly towards the end - while the story really disappoints seeing the quality of the classic original. The co-op is original and challenging, but then the question is raised where that's enough of a reason to purchase this one. Also take in mind that you'll always have to be with four. Only for shooter fans with friends, so to speak, or for those who can get it at bargain price.
Syndicate is a game of thrills and missed opportunities. And so it's important to know what you want from this shooter before you commit. Come to it for the thrills of joining a team and mowing down gunners like so many weeds in a Colorado research facility. Come to it for a chilly vision of the future, where the minds of meddlers can be altered with a simple computer program. There are numerous games better at providing single-player satisfaction, however, and this is where Syndicate falters. While it isn't entirely successful, the campaign still dares to be different. And while "different" isn't the same as "great," Syndicate reminds you that with a bit of creative effort, shooters don't have to play by Modern Warfare rules to be truly modern.
Syndicate hints at a fantastic puzzle meta-game, but relies on bullets flying to get through every level. Where the story walks a familiar road, the cooperative campaign’s tough-but-fun arcade action makes up for the missteps. Though uneven, Syndicate remains a good shooter full of incomplete great ideas. Grabbing three friends and battling for corporate supremacy online is well worth your time, but don’t expect to be wowed by playing alone.
Overall, Syndicate for the Xbox 360 is a good shooter, but I would not consider it a great one. The reality of the market makes Syndicate feel far too familiar, as it possesses the same elements seen in so many other shooters already on store shelves. Despite this, the combat in Syndicate is a blast and the co-op mode was perfectly executed while the sounds in the game are wonderful and the game’s breach apps manage to inject some life into the game. If you are looking for an enjoyable shooter to play along side a buddy, or online with some friends, then Syndicate has your name on it, otherwise this may be a shooter you will want to rent of play the demo of before you make the full price retail plunge.
When Syndicate first starts it shows you a rather sparse title screen with few options and little visual flare. It feels light; stripped back and streamlined but a little unambitious. The game that follows is similar in many ways. Its got a strong aesthetic, but it feels a little anaemic and light. Its also overshadowed in most ways by the superior Deus Ex: Human Revolution. That being said, if you’re looking for even more cyber punk-ing, and you like your bleak corporate futures with less sneaking and more action, Syndicate remains a solid and enjoyable experience throughout.
Syndicate is a meta-message. Where playing as a soulless killing drone feels like it. Where a sterile and controlled dystopian future masquerades as nostalgia updated to version 2.0. Where this cyberpunk product can’t even decide if it should be a sweeping, operatic Sci-Fi or a fun, gritty game with a Skrillex soundtrack shoe-horned in.
