After spending a few days tinkering around with it, we like certain things about UEFA Champions League 2006-2007, but we feel that it's pretty much a build on last fall's game more than a distinctive title that stands out on its own. The Ultimate Team adds a nicer touch than we'd initially anticipated it would, although it's still probably a bit complicated for some to enjoy, especially in regard to team management and contract cards. It's still got a lot of rewards, which we like. Xbox Live proved to be a bit off and on for us, as we had problems with quite a few games, but others worked smoothly. It does, however, integrate very well with the Ultimate Team system. While we were more cautious and reserved about the current-gen games, we're a bit happier about the 360 version. If you're a soccer completionist, it's a must-buy, although we think that casual gamers might be better suited picking up an annual title such as FIFA or Winning Eleven.

UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 is a fun game with realistic and accurate play. The instructions leave a bit to be desired, but even novice soccer players will be able to figure out the mechanics of the game without too much time and trouble. The thing that sets this game apart from other soccer games is the card trading element. It is fun and addictive, and earning packs is almost more fun than winning the matches themselves. With a strong game engine and good graphics, this game gets a strong recommendation.

Football fans should have no problem picking up U.E.F.A. and enjoying themselves with a layered experience, but for me and gamers like me, I have a hard time even fairly scoring U.E.F.A. because it is so niche, so specifically targeted that a fully “objective” review just isn’t possible. For me it was more a matter of just enjoying the Play Now mode when some friends are over and we want to play some video game soccer. That’s fun. Not worrying about Achievements or cards or if the players are being accurately portrayed in physicality or their endurance – just playing and having a few laughs.

If you’re a member of the die-hard, fanatical, and obsessive soccer crew, UEFA will keep you busy until the next edition of FIFA hits in roughly 25 minutes. Card fans will be satisfied with the new options, while non-soccer fans will wonder what’s different enough to justify the price. UEFA is milking the sport dry on the 360, and it’s shame since it plays a solid game on the field.
