And that’s the long and short of The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct – it could’ve been so much more. It has the actors from the show, it’s tied into a cool universe, and it mashes up Oregon Trail elements with a thinking man’s FPS. It just doesn’t do anything with this stuff. It’s a half-baked attempt at a game that can be fun in the occasional spooky part, but ends up under-delivering in every way.
Ultimately, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is a short, tedious tie-in that should only really be picked up by lovers of absolutely all things zombie. It’s not broken and the basic sneaking and zombie-killing mechanics work well enough, but they soon become tiresome and repetitive. The few interesting ideas such as branching levels, and inventory and survivor management, are extremely underdeveloped and amount to little more than pointless logistics. Furthermore, there should have been much more focus on the story, characters and emotional turmoil of the Dixon's road trip to help tie it all together and hold our interest. Like Merle Dixon, this game is the crude jerk brother to the other Walking Dead’s sensitive but powerful, Daryl.
For a game that bears the word "survival" in its title, there's nothing life-threatening about this journey through the Georgia countryside. It's too bad, because this isn't a game without strengths. Some of the melee weapons can be really satisfying to use, and there are some clever ideas about how people would manage the logistics of a road trip during a zombie apocalypse. But the whole thing is just so dull and tedious that it captures all the worst qualities of a road trip, but none of the exciting ones.
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is terrible. It’s a waste of a licence and should be the poster child for a rushed, shameless cash grab. That is all you need to know.
It's easy to believe Terminal Reality had the skeleton in place for a unique and enthralling take on the Walking Dead franchise, but with a deadline looming, added absolutely nothing to the bones and tossed out something woefully undercooked. Survival Instinct clearly isn't finished, and has no business expecting money from any paying customer. It's the kind of hurried, jury-rigged game that risks dealing damage to a property -- an especially sour note considering all the excellent work achieved by Telltale's The Walking Dead. By contrast to 2012's adventure game, Survival Instinct cashes in all the property's goodwill to churn out a botched, incomplete, hideous little waste of time and energy.
