DescriptionWe Are Cubes is a fixed-screen shoot 'em up. The player's cube is restricted to horizontal movements at the bottom of the screen and needs to defend against incoming cubes. The speciality is that the cubes don't straight move towards the player, but bounce on the side boundaries of the path. If they hit each other a few times, they melt together and form a new enemy. Those may also melt together until the highest of overall four forms (differentiated by their colour) is reached. Likewise, if the player shoots one of the melted enemies - which also appear on their own - they break down to the lower forms.
The perspective is angled, the player's shots are relatively slow and only one them can be active at the same time; this means it is required to predict enemy movements in order to hit. All enemies of a wave have to be killed and if one of them reaches the bottom of the screen, the cube bounces back up. Each enemy touch is deadly, but fortunately dead enemies may leave behind useful power-ups which either instantly improve the cube's abilities (more simultaneous shots, movement speed, bullet speed and score gain) or can be activated at a later time (pushing enemies back, freezing enemies, laser or shield). However, only one of the latter ones can be held and collecting a new one deletes the old extra.
There are two single-player modes: arcade (21 waves) and survival (surviving as long as possible). The two multiplayer modes are based on the single-player modes. In arcade multiplayer, the players still have to fight waves, but also each other. This mode has a number of additional power-ups which all affect the opponent negatively: disabling controls, draining score, stealing power-ups and speed reduction. Survival multiplayer is co-operational and ends when both players are dead. The surviving player can revive his/her partner when collecting the associated power-up.
The ultimate goal is to rank in the online leader-board. To reach a high score, it is important to keep the score multiplier up by not missing shots. Reaching achievements (not associated with the official Xbox Live achievement system) unlocks bonus content.
