All things considered, Commando 3: Wolf of the Battlefield is an excellent game in the download marketplace. It's a great fit for the 360 and PSN, and is exactly the kind of light, high-energy entertainment we've come to expect from that segment of the market. It stands at least shoulder to shoulder with the best on the platforms and is great fun to play. Priced at only 800 points, fans of the genre shouldn't hesitate to pick it up and those new to this type of game should at least check out the demo.

Despite the minor flaws, I loved most every minute of Wolf of the Battlefield. This is a great game to pop in when you're sitting around with only a few minutes to spare, or when a couple of friends are looking for a quick way to kill some time.

Gaming Age
Rarely do new versions of old classics manage to recapture what made the earlier games special while doing new things to bring the concept into a new era. But Wolf of the Battlefield succeeds. It's flashier, more detailed, more exciting and lets you play with friends while feeling a lot like Commando must have felt like way back before we knew any better.

Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 is a nice step back to the glory days of arcade action where dying really meant starting over. If you are a fan of games that reward you for perseverance than this is your cup of tea. However, casual fans will quickly become frustrated with a lack of continue and a set number of lives. Couple this with the fact that 360 owners get an invitation into the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (now that is a mouthful) and you have one of the best downloadable action games currently available, regardless of which console you have.

Gamers' Temple, The
Commando 3 is a very fun shooter and a worthy introduction to Capcom's line of next-gen downloadable sequels for their classic franchises. Like most shooter games, Commando 3 is best played in short sequences but the game will have you coming back to find secret areas and trying to beat your best score. The four modes of difficulty add a bit to the replay value as well. The game is only about 1 hour long from start to finish, but you most likely won't be blasting straight through on your first play-through - a bit of familiarity with each level helps out a lot for completing the full game since there are no continues and each player only receives a few lives. At 800 points, Commando 3 is worth a try for those that are hungry for a good arcade shooter or those that want a good blend of Commando and Mercs (Commando 2).

Action fans and just casual gamers looking for a quick way to spend a couple of hours -- or even a couple of minutes; will get a kick out of Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. It's easy enough for anyone to pick up, but just hard enough to master to give gamers plenty of replay value. Graphically solid, and an all around fun game, Commando 3 is definately worth a download for just about any gamer.

WOTB is a blast to play. One of the few things that hold the game back is that it is too short and is much more enjoyable with another player. A serious player can beat the game in just over an hour and multiplayer can take less if the team knows what they are doing. The best thing about the game is the old-school roots. If you are the type of gamer that enjoys killing a few hundred enemies in a quest for a bigger high score, then Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 is just the thing you need to relive the good old days.

Commando 3 is a great addition to your gaming library if you’re aware of its merits and its faults before purchasing it. Those of us who grew up playing games like Total Carnage and Victory Road will find this game to be an enthralling blast from the past. But if your ego gets bruised easily, you may want to pass on this one. Dying isn’t just something that happens every so often in this game, it’s a way of life.

Gaming Nexus
Despite its short campaign and repetitive nature, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 proves to be an exciting action game for one to three players. It's not quite as good as the two games that came before it, but that shouldn't keep you from having a fantastic time battling warlords and killing evil soldiers!

Game Shark
Even with its short length, lack of proper bosses, and unimpressive leaderboards, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 is the type of intense, man-tested Schwarzenegger-approved, dose of destruction that XBLA needs more of—it won’t replace AAA shooters like Gears of War or Call of Duty 4, but it doesn’t have to. Sometimes a quick, callous display of military mayhem is all you need to feel like a hero.

Game Chronicles
Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 is a classic retro military shooter that instantly took me back to the early 90’s and the same style of shooter I was playing on my Turbo Grafx-16 CD. This is old-school gaming at its very best and I couldn’t be happier for the trip down memory lane.

Vehicles come into play as well, but are way more fun in co-op mode. Are you seeing a pattern here? The game is simply way more fun playing with friends than all by your lonely, and if you do play by yourself you’ll be way challenged to complete the game solo, even on the lower difficulty levels. It just doesn’t scale down that much. Commando 3 definitely has its appeal, but a lot more could have been done to extend the gameplay or just make it feel more varied. Bosses are pretty redundant as well, and fighting them is more of an avoidance game than anything. I guess that’s staying true to the classic nature of the game, but if you’re going to upgrade the visual presentation this much, why not put that same effort into the overall game?

For big fans of top-down shooters, I can’t personally see anything that will really put you off enjoying Commando 3, for those who aren’t so fanatical, you’ll lose interest quickly. For people like me sat firmly in the middle? Yes, Commando 3 is OK. The multiplayer co-op (even with the previously mentioned major flaw) is a lot of fun with a couple of friends. As a bonus, those who purchase this game, will also get a Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (geez, that’s a mouthful) BETA. And although only offering two characters (Ken and Ryu) and one backdrop, it might just be the thing which persuades some folks to buy Commando 3. Cheeky Capcom.

So, Commando 3 is a bit of a tricky call on whether or not you should download it. At 400 points, we would say go for it. But at a steep 800 points, you may want to check the demo first. However, keep in mind that if you download it now, you get access to the Super Street Fighter II HD Remix Beta (irritating to type, even worse to speak). So two games for the price of one? Not too shabby. We’ll mark it as a rental here, but check out the demo before committing to a purchase.

Aside from the fact that the game can get a bit repetitive and is rather on the short side, Wolf of the Battlefield is a retro-styled shooter that’s hard to put down. Not only will the game put a smile on the face of any gamer who loved Commando back in the day but it will also entertain gamers new to Capcom’s brand of arcade shooters.

Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 goes for about ten bucks and is, in my opinion, one of the better purchases you can make for that price on the PSN or XBLA. Then again, I'm a fan of the old school shooter games, especially those with a military theme because they make for such fun multiplayer co-op experiences. There is lots of repetition in Commando 3, and it's not a very long game, but darn it if isn't a fun game with a friend or two friends. That's what I take away from Commando 3, a simple, fun, short game that is more accessible and rewarding than most games with a similar price.

PAL Gaming Network (PALGN)
Commando 3: Wolf of the Battlefield does a robust job of modernly recreating a nostalgic experience, while glossing it up with a nice coat of paint. For those who like their games fluff-free, like chasing high scores and taking their buddies online for some hectic gunning, the game has something for you. The only issue is that both the XBLA and PSN have other games that do the same just as well, and some that do better.

Worth Playing
The only audience Commando 3 is likely to pull in are those who remember the originals fondly and wish to take a moment to go back to the games of their childhood. Quickly, these same people will remember that games of their childhood were awful by today's standards, and vow to never be suckered in again — at least until the next Contra remake comes out. If you absolutely must have another top-down, run-and-gun shooter, then you can pick up Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. Otherwise, you may as well save your $10 and put it toward a better cause.

If you have been hungering for a solid cooperative shooter, Commando 3 delivers some enjoyable sequences and excellent design. Although it is a lot of fun while it lasts, the game has little variety and only modest replay value.

Cheat Code Central
Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 is a decent shooter that anyone could enjoy. As long as you realize you'll be getting only a few hours of dumb fun out of the deal, blasting away at home and online is a riot. However, if you've only got limited download dollars, know that there are far superior offerings for both the PS3 and 360. As such, I can't give this game a full seal of approval, but I can say those initially intrigued by the title will probably find it's worth the money.

DCEmu
It is the second sequel to Capcom's Commando arcade game, first released in 1985 and then ported to nearly every system of the time, (including the BCC Micro which I owned, played and sucked at). Lucky for me this game is a lot easier (or I have gotten a lot better, but I doubt that) as its obviously aimed at western audiences with it modern American animé/cartoon stylised graphics.

‘Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3’ hits the spot. It’s been a long time since I’ve played an arcade shooter like this, and I’m glad that the third installment in this series has been released. It’s high octane thrills but unfortunately stops a little too short with a play time of only about an hour or so. Once you beat the game you can select your favorite level to start at so you’re not always playing the same first level time and time again if you don’t want to, but it just doesn’t add enough replay value to warrant any type of glowing recommendation.

IGN
In a crowded field of throwback arcade shooters on XBLA, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 just doesn’t stand out. The nostalgia of the Commando name isn’t enough to carry this one beyond the ordinary, and the lackluster graphics and generic art style don't help either. As arcade shooters go, Commando 3 isn’t a bad game, but it's just nothing special. Overall, we can't help but be disappointed.

Totally Gaming Network
There are far worse shoot ‘em ups on the XBLA though, and for 800 points this isn’t too bad a game to add to your collection if the demo wets your whistle. For what it’s worth though, if you gave me a straight choice between this and an absolutely 100% accurate clone of the original, complete with the same sound effects, jaunty tunes and gameplay I’d choose the original Commando every time.

Game Revolution
For decent gameplay, an inoffensive art style, co-op play locally or over Xbox Live, and multiple difficulty modes, Commando 3's price tag at 800 points is reasonable. But the question becomes: Why buy Commando 3? You can get an exciting, if not sparse on features, shooter with Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved for half the price. You can get many more exciting, albeit more expensive, shooters on the Xbox 360 like Gears of War or BioShock. Nevertheless, if you play Commando 3, you'll probably enjoy yourself, even if it's been done many, many times before.

Official Xbox Magazine (UK)
If you download Contra on XBLA you'll see how rock hard shooters used to be. This is too easy, Assault Heroes 2 too hard, leaving a hole in the middle were the perfect shooter should be. Are the genre's days out-numbered and out-gunned? From the looks of things, it might sadly be yes. Lets hope Bonic Commando brings back some of that classic Capcom magic.

Giant Bomb
But monotonous isn't broken. There's a simple charm to Commando 3's visual style, especially its cartoonish menu art. Of course, those hints of individuality only serve to make the gameplay a little more disappointing. As a package, Commando 3 isn't bad, but the only thing likely to give players a sense of lasting value is the inclusion of the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta in the 360 version, and that doesn't even go out until June 25.
