There’s nothing unlucky about an absorbing FPS with a gripping visual style and story line. The first cel-shaded FPS could easily have been a recipe for a marketing-contrived disaster. But XIII is just the opposite a truly dazzling, inspired game that mixes a riveting story with a stylish look and absorbing gameplay.

XIII's presentation is excellent, along with the level designs. The graphics are crisp, well detailed, and stunning. Pop-up windows are displayed when you shoot someone in their face; killing them instantly and showing the bullet penetrate their skull. My only complaint about the graphics are the slow load times between levels. XIII is the best looking FPS on PS2 and equally as good game play wise as it is beautiful. XIII is most likely the best FPS of 2003; I suggest you add this one to your holiday must-have list.

XIII is a stylish, and well-executed stealth shooter for one player, but only mediocre beyond that. If multiplayer is all important, or if you want a non-linear experience like Deus Ex then don’t look here, but if you are after one of the few shooters that can stand comparison with the mighty Halo, then you have come to the right place.

XIII is a brilliant game, full of character and imagination. The new ideas and little touches the developers have experimented with are excellent. More importantly, it’ll keep drawing you back. Moments of infuriation turn to elation when you figure out how to progress, and with triumph comes another satisfying piece of the puzzle that is the magnificently woven storyline. Steer well clear if you’re easily irritated, but for the rest of us, an undiscovered, underappreciated gem awaits.

XIII is stylish, clever and beautifully put together. Some will say that behind the gloss and the plot-twists the game itself is relatively shallow, but the gloss is so good that it doesn't really matter: it's like having sex with Cameron Diaz and then complaining that she didn't have anything intelligent to say about the works of Plato. If you like realism, seriousness and existential thinking then you might be better served elsewhere; if you want a game that makes you smile and a good story well-told then XIII is your lucky number.

It’s not rare to see a game based on comic book characters but it is certainly rare to see one based on an obscure French graphic novel . . . especially one that has an intricate storyline with plot twists aplenty. XIII, though, has received much attention for its visual style. While cel-shading is not a new concept for video games (see Auto Modellista for the PS2 or Jet Set Radio Future for the Xbox), it is definitely new to the first-person shooter genre. Will this unique look make this game an altogether new first-person shooter experience?

With two-player split-screen (four with Xbox and GC) and four-player online, the sum is still looking sweet. If you like the look and the storytelling style, XIII will keep you glued to the end. But the fact is if you prefer a more hyper-realistic approach to your action, you may want to look elsewhere for your gunplay thrills.

All in all, XIII has much to set it aside from the usual FPS crowd. With a unique graphic style and flair, and a storyline that will keep you pulling the trigger all the way to the end, make for a really enjoyable game.

Overall, XIII is a fun game to play through, and it's worth a purchase if you're up for a change from your more traditional looking first-person shooters. It even comes packed with an online component and a level editor that allows for some longevity. But, if you're considering purchasing XIII for it's single player, be advised that it's pretty much a one-time ordeal, and you may want to wait until the price drops on it a little. In the end though, lacking it may be in some regards, the game was a delightful romp that you won't regret purchasing.

Overall this is a good game that uses a very good graphical approach to make you think there is more here than you first thought. That is not to say this is a bad game, with a poor storyline - far from it, but when you actually delve into it further this is your standard first person shooter with a beautiful outside.

The lesson to be learned from this game, I suppose, is this; if you're going to get a tattoo, get one that'll help you remember who you are should you ever get amnesia. "XIII" will do you no good. Perhaps that's why so many people tattoo the name of their lover across their bum...should they get amnesia, they can find someone with that name, and who's willing to look at their butt, and have that person explain to them who they are.

XIII has a great story-driven sheen, but at it's core, it's weighed down by some occasional bewildering flaws, in addition to the lackluster weapons and simple combat we usually see in lesser productions. Perhaps if the enemy AI had had just a little more self-defense capability, instead of generally standing and shooting, it would have been better. Other games have gotten away with this by using large numbers of foes and/or unique, satisfying weapons, or multiple ways to achieve a goal. Without these elements, XIII is a fun but linear play-through with middle-of-the-road AI.

XIII begins with you washed up on a beach in sunny Southern California, rescued by a Baywatch-style beauty and taken to the lifeguard shack. You'll get a few flashbacks that suggest an undercover operation gone wrong, but you won't get much chance to ponder what's happened before the bullets start flying. All you have to go on is a key to a bank, since you have no memory, and you'll have to plow through bunches of bad guys before you can get there.

Gaming can be such a contradiction. One minute you're sporting the intense expression of immersion, caught up in a thickening plot that's spinning out of control in a breathtaking web of conspiracy, built around the solid frame of creeping stealth tension and manic action, and the next you're a foul-mouthed sea of rage with veins bulging out of your temples in throbbing sympathy as you're forced to repeat the same section for the 50th time. Welcome to XIII, a game that so easily could have been game of the year.

As most gamers have probably heard by now, XIII is a cel-shaded first-person shooter based on a French comic book--excuse moi, "graphic novel"--about a military operative who's suffering from amnesia and is being chased after by both the authorities and a shadowy group of Bad People who want to do Bad Things. It feels like a bouquet of Hitman 2, No One Lives Forever, and the movie The Bourne Identity, but manages to distinguish itself, just barely. The question remains, however, if XIII can provide a compelling experience, no matter what its pedigree, and it has a tough time pulling away from familiar territory.

Conceptually, XIII lives up to the hype. The preliminary work that the developers did practically flies off the game and dives right into your room. There's a lot of brilliance to be found within this title, primarily in its story presentation. Trying hard to be like a comic book, XIII will remind you how much fun it is to play a game that's actually cool.

If there’s one type of game that we don’t have a shortage of, it’s FPS titles. Starting way back in the days of Wolfenstien 3-D and heading all the way up to now with top releases like Halo and Timsplitters 2, it’s easy to say that the FPS market is a popular one with no shortage of titles available and no signs of slowing down. Due to that fact, it can be hard to come up with some new creative ideas for the industry to really generate attention and turn a few heads, but Ubi Soft seems to have done just that with its most recent FPS PS2 release called simply XIII.

XIII is a cel-shaded first-person shooter based on a long-running French comic book of the same name written by William Vance and Jean Van Hamme. For those of you who are not familiar with the XIII comic, the comic features a conspiracy ridden story which includes themes of amnesia, in which you must uncover sinister plots against yourselves, the U.S. government, and even the president himself. You begin as XIII, waking up on a beach located on the East Cost of the United States. You have been shot in the head, rendering you with amnesia. The only clues to your identity are the number XIII, in roman numerals, tattooed on your shoulder, and a key to a New York bank safe deposit box. You as XIII must uncover not only your identity, but you must also prevent a mysterious group from destroying the US government.

XIII definitely has a visionary style that sets it apart from anything else in the FPS genre, but once you look through the cel-shaded visuals, professional voice acting, and graphic novel presentation and effects, you are left with a pretty standard shooter that doesn’t really innovate or improve upon the genre. The enemy AI is lacking in places and the poor save and load design will cause you nearly as many hours of frustration as fun. Of course fans of the genre or fans of comic books will probably be able to overlook the few flaws and enjoy a great conspiracy adventure with a story worthy of the big screen. And that is where XIII’s strength lies, in its epic storyline and stylish presentation that mixes unique visuals, a theatrical score, and top-quality voice acting. If you ever wanted to see a comic book leap from the printed page and come to life on your computer this is the game to play.

PlayStation 2Worth Playing
For most American gamers, XIII will not be recognized with the same enthusiasm as that of the huge French fan-base that the franchise has amassed. It is a cel-shaded first-person shooter based on an incredibly popular French comic book. The videogame certainly uses its comic book influence to an impressive degree - boasting comic book panel animation cut scenes and utilizing text bubbles to represent the various instances of sound in the game in order to purport highly stylized action and dialogue sequences. Fans of the source material will undoubtedly find a lot to like here due to the fact that the game is able to bring the comic to life in 3D without sacrificing any of its intrigue or cut-throat violence, but for those who aren't familiar with the world of XIII the game may come off as a bit derivative.

XIII is a nice single player experience - not a flawless one but well worth the price of admission. Still, if you want to play through a good story on the easy or normal difficulty settings, there's a lot to like here. In addition to the story elements, there are various multiplayer modes that can pass some time, so it ends up being a fairly long-lasting game if you want it to be. But really, you can see the best parts of XIII by just playing through the story mode on easy, which makes it better suited for a rental.

In summary, XIII has several things going for it: its stylish and original art design, certain graphical elements, like the pop-up windows, that not only look good but add new gameplay nuances to boot and a good story that unfolds through enjoyable dialogue and atmospheric flashback sequences. If you're patient enough you'll find the final missions to be engaging both in terms of the way the plot unfolds and how the action picks up. On the other hand, the core gameplay often lacks substance, and will leave you longing for a more fulfilling gameplay experience. And just about as things start to heat up, the game comes to an abrupt ending that leaves you wondering what comes next.

The cel shading of the game gives XIII a distinct feel. Unfortunately, the rest of the game could have used some work. Make no mistake, though, this is definitely a single player title first, multiplayer title second. Even in the former, it lacks the material to vault it into the stratosphere and turn XIII into a classic. Style and visuals can only do so much for a game. In our post dot-com world, image is not everything, substance does count for something. While XIII has all the ducks (action, story, actors), it’s too bad they weren’t arranged neatly in a row.

Anyway, enough jokes, and enough razzing on a comic genius like Orlando. Despite their camp humor value, Duchovny and West are pretty decent actors to secure for a video game. XIII betrays its solid cast -- and its great score, and its amazingly unique appearance -- by being simply an average game at heart. Raw shoot-‘em-ups can be great, but a story so complex and a visual world so obviously labored over deserves more than a one-off, linear, guns-blazing FPS -- I’m left feeling unsatisfied for want of a rounder experience that engages my tactical and strategic thinking on the same high level as it does my eyes and ears. This is like creating a visual style based on postimpressionist pointillism…and then using it to produce the next Madden title. By working on two completely different mental levels, XIII fails to exploit the true promise of its brilliant concept.

For me XIII feels like it's simply going through the motions, almost as if it's doing as little as possible and still be worthwhile. Beyond the sometimes-interesting story, this game just reuses the same clichés we've seen in every generic first person shooter for the last six years. The various locations are often interesting, but most of the excitement is bled dry by mundane level objectives and the terrible enemy A.I. If you can look past all that, though, you will find that XIII offers a mystery that is actually pretty compelling and worth playing the game to decipher.

All in all XIII comes out with lots of style and enough going for it to make a great game but ends up falling flat. With David Duchovny, the excellent story, the cel-shaded comic book feel, there is definitely style coming out of the seams. But style only goes so far if the game play doesn't have you wanting to come back for more. In the end XIII is a pretty easy game to let go and move on from. I'm sure with all the money spent on this cross platform shooter that their may be more in the works in the XIII series. If that is the case, maybe there will be some lessons learned about compelling game play next time around. I would score this game lower for this but there are enough good things going on style and story wise to lift it from an extremely mediocre rating. Time and post holiday season reports will only tell if XIII will be continue to be an unlucky number.

In some ways, it makes the art simpler to draw. There are fewer colors and color variations, for example, than a comparably realistic scene. The wood is a homogenous tone of brown. Metal can be drawn in a hue or two. But sometimes, it makes for interesting effects. Shattered glass looks a lot different in the XIII world than it does in ours. There are tracers to the grenades you throw; another interesting effect.

XIII was a pretty good game, but it had its weak points. First of all, XIII is a FPS that has a comic book look to it and I have to give credit to the developers for trying something new and unique. The idea comes from the French XIII comic book line. I am a huge X-files fan, and using David Duchovny for the main character’s voice (#XIII) was kind of nice because it is so familiar to me, but also strange at the same time. Other famous people that play characters are Adam West and Eve.

XIII has a unique and potentially interesting premise, and some will certainly want to drag their way through the single-player campaign just to watch the story unfold, but the game doesn't really differentiate itself from the wide array of other first-person shooters on the market. The cel-shaded graphical style works in the context of trying to re-create a comic book, but the models and other graphical elements fall short. Given the extreme amount of competition in this genre, fans of first-person shooting are advised to spend their time elsewhere.

XIII is a cel-shaded first-person shooter based on a long-running French comic book of the same name. The game definitely plays up its comic book roots, complete with readable sound effects and comic-book-like panels that pop up while you're playing. While it definitely has a certain sense of style to it, the game itself misses its mark, and the total package isn't one that will hold the interest of most first-person shooter players.

There’s evidence that XIII wanted to be something more than run-of-the-mill (there’s a window for viewing skills you gain, but there’s no mention anywhere or anytime of how you get, improve, or select these skills—this is no Deus EXIII), but aside from its singular style and presentation, this game is routinely frustrating and frustratingly routine.

If you're in the mood for a shooter with style, action, and lasting value, you're better off with Serious Sam than with XIII. I like what Ubisoft was going for in this game, and there's no doubt that it has more panache than most shooters. It's the little things that ruin XIII, and its unique presentation of the game environment just isn't enough to offset the flaws.

Overall, XIII ends up being the Ryan Seacrest of first person shooters. It doesn't stand out from its peers in any way shape or form, and when it tries to, it falls flat on its face, just like Seacrest does when he tries to host American Idol. The game could have been excellent if they would have worked out the bit with the cel shading properly. The game could have been above average if they would have added a decent quick-save, and not pissed off the remaining few who did like the game by adding in a decent ending with a hint of closure. But they didn't, and it ends up getting the score you see there up top. Good try, good ideas, but bad implementation.

Overall, XIII is a solid, competent shooter, one with a unique presentation and a story just intriguing enough to keep you playing through the end. The simplistic combat, generic design and savegame oddities keep it out of the realm of greatness, but if you're looking for a shooter with a good story, you'll get your money's worth out of XIII.

When it comes right down to it, XIII is a fine game. I have a feeling it'll disappoint many, simply because the pre-release hype became a bit too intense in the past few months. But with your expectations tempered, there's enough gameplay here to keep you entertained for at least a little while. I wish the multiplayer offered more, as it would no doubt extend the title's replay value. The single-player experience is enjoyable, if not revolutionary. And hell, maybe the graphical style really does it for you. By all means, give XIII a shot. Just don't expect the FPS of the year because, sadly, this isn't it.

Aesthetics can get a title pretty far in the video game industry. But graphical tricks stand the chance of becoming clichéd gimmicks as quickly as tired gameplay mechanics. When Ubisoft announced that it would release the first cel-shaded first-person shooter, skeptics were quick to insult the company's apparent hop onto the bandwagon. But as people were shown more of the game, the dismay turned to intrigue. Could a first-person shooter really feel like a live-action comic book? It was looking hopeful, especially after an extremely positive showing at ECTS where it won both Best Console Game of Show and Best Overall Game of Show. But with the finished product sitting inside my console, I can tell you that it doesn't quite live up to the hype.

It’s too bad XIII’s linear single-player game isn’t nearly as thrilling as the delivery. You basically go from mission to mission shooting bad guys in very typical first-person fashion using a standard assortment of weaponry. Pistols, a sniper rifle, assault rifle, machine gun, rocket launcher staples of the trade, but none of which pack much visceral punch. The crossbow is probably the best of the bunch because of a cool little paneled sequence that triggers when you successfully snipe a guy with it.

And despite its groovy style, XIII isn’ much more than a run-of-the-mill game. Its presentation is definitely worthy of a look (particularly if you own an Xbox) but its gameplay is about as straightforward - and in some cases boring - as it gets for an FPS. Maybe they would have had more success if they named it XIV.

While rare moments of XIII's game play allow the promise and potential of erstwhile "could've been" to shine through, the overall experience is a disappointing one, and leaves that player to wonder where those four discs worth of game went. The cel-shaded gimmick quickly proves unable to support an otherwise unremarkable title, falling to the roadside next to ragdoll physics and destructible terrain. However, experiencing the clandestine voice acting of b-list actor Adam West, rapper Eve, and lifelike automaton David Duchovny may be the worth the price of admission once this title ends up in the bargain bin.
