Yagers nearly two dozen levels have you undertake a variety of missions with pretty simple objectives like find X and destroy Y. Everything takes place planetside, so you won’t have to worry about losing your bearings. However, a few of the missions have more personality than any action flight game deserves. One of them has you manning a turret over your favorite bar as one of your pals catapults random furniture into the air for targets, while another arms you with a hose. Sweet.

Es gibt Spiele, die sind eine Legende. „Wing Commander“ war in den 1990ern sicherlich einer dieser Titel. Die Mischung aus Spielfilmsequenzen, gemischt mit Flugaction, begeisterte weltweit Millionen Fans. Einen ähnlichen Weg ging vor knapp zwei Jahren das deutsche Entwicklerstudio Yager Development. Inspiriert vom PC und den „Wing Commander“-Teilen erschufen sie eines der wohl besten „Flugspiele“, die bislang auf Microsofts Xbox erschienen sind. Für alle, denen „Yager" bislang unbekannt war, hier nun unser „Classic“-Test.

Die Geschichte von Yager spielt gegen Ende des 21. Jahrhunderts: Konzerne regieren die Welt und herrschen über ganze Landstriche. Hier und da existieren noch ein paar rechtsfreie Gebiete, so genannte Freihandelszonen. Ohne Aufsicht durch Konzerne verdienen sich dort Lebenskünstler, Fischer und Händler, aber auch Söldner und Piraten ihren Unterhalt. Für Piloten, deren Jäger oder Frachter keine kräftige Bordbewaffnung aufweist, sind diese Gebiete ziemlich gefährlich. Das weiß auch Magnus Tide.

Yager ist ein durchweg gutes und empfehlenswertes Actionspiel. abwechslungsreiche Missionen, wie man sie selten findet, perfekte technische Präsentation und eine durchweg gelungene Story sorgen für 15-20 Stunden Spielzeit, wobei hier jedoch der hohe Schwierigkeitsgrad ein Wörtchen mitzureden hat. Die kleineren Mängel mindern den Spielspass nur selten und so kommen Freunde von Star Lancer, Wing Commander, Freespace, Crimson Skies oder der Schleichfahrt Serie samt Nachfolger hier definitiv auf ihre Kosten, wenn sie durch die Ruinen des zukünftigen Bitterfeld im Schleichmodus an den Geschütztürmen vorbeischleichen, dem DST Kommandant Gunther von Berg ein Schnippchen schlagen, sich getarnt im feindlichen Bomber in die Höhle des Löwen wagen, ihr eigenes Schiff zurückerobern und der Detonation im sabotierten Hangars noch gerade so durch ein waghalsiges Flugmanöver entkommen können, bevor die Sicherheitstore sich schließen.

Yager ist ein Spiel für zwischendurch, die Spielzeit ist mit 10 bis 15 Stunden recht kurz, dafür wird Action (praktisch) nonstop geliefert. Nach den ersten Missionen wurde ich aber vor allem durch die Story und die Videos am Spielen gehalten. Erst die letzten fünf Missionen, welche vom Schwierigkeitsgrad richtig hart gestaltet sind, haben mich wieder deutlich mehr gefesselt. Fans von Spielen wie Aquanox, mit welchem Yager wohl am ehesten zu vergleichen ist, sollten aber bedenkenlos zugreifen.

You may have read a preview of Yager a few months ago in GE describing what was sounding to be a pretty good game. Action air combat with a twisting plot line and some great visuals and designs to boot. Well since then the GE offices have been desperately trying to get their hands on the final version, and after weeks of waiting it very unexpectedly turned up on my doorstep.

While Yager is a relatively old game -- which occasionally shows its age graphically -- and which shipped in Europe about two years ago, it's a solid, well-designed game that's got personality, solid game mechanics, and a compelling story. It makes space-shooters fun again in new clever ways.

His name is Yeager, Chuck Yeager - possibly the world’s most famous military and experimental aircraft pilot, and he has nothing to do with this game. The action flyer Yager, which is even pronounced the same as chucky boy’s last name, may appear like a clever play on words at first, but we’re chalking it all up to pure coincidence. Yager doubles as the name of the German-based development house that produced this flight of fancy, which has recently been marketed in the states by Kemco.

Yager fesselt dank großer Missions-Vielfalt und schöner Landschaften. Und Yager nervt, denn mein Kampf-Gleiter steuert sich wie ein Springteufel auf Drogen. Die Speicherfunktion macht mühsam erkämpfte Fortschritte zunichte und die geringe Sichtweite nimmt mir manchmal die Übersicht. Trotzdem hält mich die filmreife Hintergrundgeschichte bei der Stange; ich bin stets gespannt, welche Wendung die Handlung in der nächsten Mission nimmt. Und fluche daher auch nur selten über den teils frustrierend hohen Schwierigkeitsgrad der Kampagne.

If you haven't played the sadly overlooked Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, get that first, but hardcore shooter fanatics will get their money's worth with Yager. Also, if it sells like I think it will, this will probably be a decent bargain bin title in a few months.

All things considered, Aerial Strike is a good but somewhat underwhelming game. Graphics are average, audio is decent, and gameplay is fun if not simplistic. Luckily, it retails for the budget-minded price of $20. If you’re a fan of the genre, this game will probably give you your money’s worth.

In my history of playing video games, I've had the opportunity to do some pretty sweet things with a starfighter, from blasting through a hall of pixellated asteroids to being Darth Vader's wingman. Sadly, nothing I did in Yager came close to matching the glee I felt in any of these moments. This isn't to say that it is a bad game - it is just unremarkable. It fails to build on any of the foundations laid by the titles that came before it, and hits that "totally mediocre" target right on the nose.

Eine Unsitte ist allerdings das Speichersystem. Warum Entwickler einen Spieler nicht selbst entscheiden lassen wann er denn speichern möchte ist mir unklar. So versuche ich genervt zehn Mal die Geschütztürme einer Basis zu markieren bevor es endlich klappt. Auch die freie Belegung der Tasten wäre wünschenswert gewesen. Wer vor einem sehr knackigen Schwierigkeitsgrad nicht zurückschreckt darf aber bedenkenlos zugreifen. Yager gehört zu den besten Xbox-Spielen der letzten Zeit.

Si Yager semble à première vue receler un vrai potentiel, il s'avère que le rythme s'essouffle d'autant plus vite que le gameplay ne parvient pas à rendre les phases de jeu vraiment dynamiques et renouvelées. L'immersion est indéniable, mais les amateurs de jeux de combat aérien ne se laisseront sans doute pas tous prendre au jeu, d'autant que le titre ne propose pas de parties à plusieurs pour relancer l'intérêt sur le long terme.

Si Yager demeure un bon jeu de combat aérien sur PC, son contenu léger et son manque de charisme fait que l'on ne ressent jamais ce frisson épique qui caractérise les autres productions du genre. L'expérience est loin d'être déplaisante mais seuls les inconditionnels de cette catégorie se donneront la peine d'aller jusqu'au bout.

Looking like something of a cross between Jedi Starfighter (which is no bad thing) and Incoming (which is), with a twist of Battle Engine Aquila, Yager Developments has put its name to a game that promises originality and a rich storyline along with absorbing flight-combat. Sounds alright doesn't it? It is!

Er zit echter heel wat potentieel in Yager. Als iemand met een beetje feeling voor spelletjes zich zou bezighouden met het wegwerken van de ruwe kantjes, dan zou dit zelfs een echte aanrader kunnen zijn. Indien je kan leven met de lunaparkstijl, dan ga je hier veel plezier aan besteden. Een wondermooie action flightsim die je kwijlend naar je scherm doet kijken, maar tegelijkertijd je zenuwen zwaar op de proef zal stellen.

With a little more polish and options this game could have been exceptional. The content and graphics were done wonderfully, but the poor interface and frustrating controls get in the way of the enjoyment. However, for the $19 price tag it’s a fun and fairly long game from a genre that doesn’t get enough attention.

Aerial Strike: The Yager Missions won’t win any game of the year awards. It is probably not destined to be a cult classic. In all likelihood, it will fade into obscurity in value bins and used game shelves across America. This is a shame, because there is enough to like about Aerial Strike to provide $20 worth of entertainment to a good home. It may be a shaggy dog, but it is still a good dog.

To tell the truth, I installed Aerial Strike with low expectations, partly because I never heard of the game, partly because it’s priced as a budget title. The first time I was given the controls it actually gave me that cheap feeling I got from titles such as Breed (yes, I know we’re all trying to forget that, but it shares the aura of cheapness). Aerial Strike, surprisingly, proved to be much better than that barely finished alpha code, though its shortcomings were enough to impact the final score.

Yager, the new dogfighting action game for the Xbox from the eponymous Yager development team out of Germany and Kemco, has only recently arrived on American shores after a year's delay. First glances of the Yager project became available all the way back in 2002, when then-publisher THQ released a few tantalizing bits of information about the game. At that time, Yager caused a stir with its visual resplendence and omnidirectional, high-G combat. Of course, a year in distribution limbo will make mincemeat of almost any video game's high profile, and the game that some once believed to be 2003's definitive aerial action extravaganza has limped into 2004 priced at a discount and without much in the way of fanfare.

Aerial Strike, taken as a whole, is a disappointment. It seemed like it had a lot of potential when the demo for it was released back in 2003, right before it dropped off the radar for 2 years. Now, with this unceremonious release, we find that the game is ultimately more of a letdown than a surprise. It has its positives, but the poor controls, lackluster story, and a “not quite right” feel to its game play do much to bring it down.

Genre assez représenté sur PC, les simulateurs spatiaux ont connu leur heure de gloire, mais force est de constater que peu de jeux de shoot « arcade » ont été portés sur nos machines. Heureusement, les développeurs allemands de Yager Development ont adapté leur titre Xbox sur nos configurations de bourgeois. Alors, qu’en est-il de ce sympathique titre qui a époustouflé beaucoup de monde avec ses graphismes lors de l'E3 2003 ?

Yager est un jeu d'action superbement réalisé, et si votre config est à la hauteur, le spectacle est au rendez-vous. Malheureusement, le gameplay devient rapidement soporifique et, pour peu que votre matelas soit confortable, votre choix sera vite fait.

Three stars, but still worth buying - it's a "value" title, and while it wouldn't be worth $50, it's worth the $20 price tag if you can adapt to the controls.

For the $19.99 price tag, the game CAN be fun if you are not really going into it expecting a lot. The graphics are pretty amazing to me, the controls are awkward, and the sound leaves a lot to be desired. It is not that the sound is that bad, but I feel like I am playing Toe Jam and Earl III on the Xbox in terms of the sound of the character in the first part of training. It makes me feel like I am playing a game for five year olds or something. The game leaves a lot to be desired, but at $19.99 you can probably find a little bit of fun in it. The graphics engine should definitely be used in some other games, but the game play should not, nor will the sound or controls. It is a valiant effort for a budget game, but just not worthy of the price or time to play it.
