I'm not sure what Grieg would have thought about one of his works being used as the background to a video game, but you have to hand it to them - it's very clever.

This game is so original, amusing and habit-forming, it will be probably be voted No 1 Spectrum game this year.

One of the qualities which make a game a winner is whether you'll keep coming back for more. Manic Miner scores well here, as it will take some time to complete. When the impressive title frame comes up, you are told to press a key to start. If you don't, the game will cycle through all 20 screens, giving you a short preview of each. impressive graphics and good sound, Bug Byte have produced a challenging game with long-lasting appeal.

Manic Miner is the grandfather of pure, platform perfection on the Spectrum that has been mimicked, blatantly copied but never bettered. A land mark title that made Mathew Smith an overnight star.

The self-respecting Spectrum owner NEEDS to have this, as well as its sequel, the IMPOSSIBLE Jet Set Willy. For the rest of us, seek it out, just to see where modern platformers came from.
