Times keep a'changin': I read today about how the Pentium 4's "NetBoost" core was expressly designed for 3D and other real-world media applications -- so much so, in fact, that typical office applications like Microsoft Word actually run slower on a 1.5 GHz P4 than on a 1.2 GHz Athlon. That led to the current poll, which is a repeat of a classic MobyGames poll question. Are graphics truly necessary for a satisfactory gameplay experience?
My great-grandmother had a very insightful reply when I asked her why she prefered to listen to radio programs even after the household got a television. She said it was because the pictures in her head were much, much better than anything she'd ever seen on television. Indeed. Of course, this could also have been because special effects back then were limited to men in big rubber suits and parlor-trick explosions.
