We've been rolling out a lot of minor changes and enhancements to MobyGames recently. One of these improvements is worth mentioning here. Technical Information about a game is now user contributable from a game's rap sheet. Also, Technical Information has been extended to allow a free form notes field to include information that can't be represented with dropdown lists and check boxes.

I had a user ask me (in private email -- try to use the public @mobygames.com emails whenever possible as more than one person answers them) what good it was to enter in ad blurbs if the back covers for a game have been submitted. Well, heck, many reasons, but the two most important reasons that I can think of are:

  1. Some of the submitted covers aren't easily readable -- especially by vision-impaired users. Ad Blurbs are.
  2. Having Ad Blurbs in the database means that you can use the Site Search function on them for additional searching power and options.

It pays to ask us these things. ;-)

I spent some time and overhauled our current Frequently-Asked Questions list. It is now completely current; thanks to those who pointed out inconsistencies and omissions.

Belboz has been getting wickety-wack with some classic Ad Blurbs from both the back of boxes and from actual advertising blurbs in old computer magazines. Some of the more impressive and classic ones include The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Falcon, and The Secret of Monkey Island. Check them out.

Well some of you have noticed that we started taking donations. Jeeze how greedy can you guys get? I know. I know. MobyGames used to be able to support itself just on ad impressions alone. However the bottom dropped out of the ad market and this is no longer the case. We've had to become a little bit creative in how we get revenue to pay our bandwidth charges. We're doing everything we can so we don't have to do the real obnoxious stuff like pop up ads and casino type stuff. If you feel like supporting MobyGames financially drop by the Friends of Moby page. Everyone who donates get a bronze star ( ) next to their name so all other MobyGames users know you are a contributing member. If you are broke or plain just don't want to, no problem. We are happy you are here anyway.

Well we're still getting tons of submissions. Some things I want to mention. Please try to have a longer description of the game. I've had to reject a few games with one and two line description entries. Also any images submitted, like box covers or screen shots, must be captured by you. We've seen a couple people submitting copyrighted material taken from other sites. This is a no-no. Also if you are submitting console game entries please make sure you include the Technical Specs. A lot of people are leaving that out. OK OK. Enough complaining. Great entries everyone. Keep it up. Oh yeah and we LOVE seeing reviews so keep those coming.

I mentioned it before and was chastised by industry professionals, but I'll do it again: FatBabies is required reading. Yes, it's negative; yes, some of it is inaccurate; yes, it's maintained and contributed to by people who are former game company employees who hold a grudge. But among the negative inaccuracies, you're kept aware of some of the wheelings and dealings in the industry, some kick-ass rumors, and some very funny commentary. Think of it as The Daily Deal for the game industry.

I mean, come on, where else can you read all sorts of (depressing) info about Origin, Activision, et al?

Just a footnote to Dave's News item: He enjoys adding new Featured Games and Polls, but did you know that the new codebase lets you do it too? Just click Contribute on the left side of the page and have at it!

Wow! It seems you really like the "new" MobyGames. The flood of positive email has been overwhelming. The contributions are pouring in. We had nearly 162 new game submissions in two days. Keep them coming. I will try to post a new poll and a new Featured Game soon. Keep in mind these are now user contributable so if you have a great idea for either feel free to contribute. Also we are looking for graphics for the new site and maybe an article or two. Keep in mind all submission become the property of MobyGames ( yeah I know, but we gotta say it ) so make sure it's yours to submit and not some other sites copyrighted material. Thanks everyone.
