OutRun Europa

aka: OutRun Europe
Moby ID: 13188
Amiga Specs

Description official description

The third game in the OutRun series, which revolutionised the third-person perspective style of racing games. The levels are set across Europe, as undercover agent Simeon Kurz attempts to recover his stolen car (and, more importantly the top-secret documents that were inside it) while escaping the police who wrongly assume him to be a vehicle thief. Unlike other titles in the series, you use a different vehicle on each level, with motorbikes and jet-skis adding variety and taking different skill to use. You must complete each level within the strict time limits, and the routes are dogged with other vehicles to avoid and overtake. You can choose between sound effects or music.

Trivia

Development

Development on the game (which is an original product based on OutRun, not an arcade conversion) originally began not long after the Amiga conversion of the first OutRun was released in 1988. By early 1989 it was previewed in magazines of the day, but the release of the Turbo OutRun arcade game, and US Gold's subsequent conversion, meant that it was pushed aside and not completed for another 2 1/2 years.

Version differences

The various formats' versions share a theme but are all essentially different games. The Master System/Game Gear title uniquely features "Road Rash" style punching when on your motorbike and rocket firing when in Porsche, and has a front end strongly resembling the C64's earlier, unreleased "OutRun".

Mysterious ZX Spectrum version

In the May 1989 issue of Your Sinclair, the magazine ran a two-page preview on a forthcoming third "OutRun" game for home computer formats, and the first one not to be based on a coin-up. Promising 15 stages divided across five European countries, stacks of new features and almost three times the frame-rate of the original ZX Spectrum version. However the game shelved two years later bears no resemblance to the previewed one that was featured in a magazine.
