Description official descriptions

Alfred the chicken must rescue his friends and his bird (pardon the pun) Floella from the Meka Chickens. The result is a platform game across differently-themed levels, which are finished by either climbing to the top of the level or killing a boss. Bonus games and secret rooms have been included, and progression sometimes requires solving positional puzzles.

Alfred cannot fly, but he can use ramps to jump up and hit enemies with his bionic beak - this kills them, but any other contact will hurt Alfred. Watch out for spiked snails though. Other enemies include whales armed with guns and stray bombs.

A charming yet fairly average platformer

The Good
The developers of "Alfred Chicken" should be commended for not following the cliche root of making their platform-game protagonist into a trendy character, (as with Cool Spot, Zool et al) but instead a comedic hero in the form of a chicken. The levels are bright and engaging and there are some sections that are particularly entertaining in this fun little platformer.

The Bad
Unfortunately, despite its charms, "Alfred Chicken" is a fairly average platformer. Also, the enemies are uninspiring and while it is certainly a fun playing experience, it is no more so than a lot of the other platformers of its age. It also lacks the polish of the best games in its genre.

The Bottom Line
"Alfred Chicken" is a product of its age. One of the endless stream of platform games made in the early 90's, it is still a fun playing experience today. However, there is certainly nothing that can be said about this game that can't be said of a host of similar titles from the period. Not the best or worst of the bunch, "Alfred Chicken" is a solid, yet average gaming experience.

Trivia

Alfred Chicken Party

Mindscape came up with a unique promotional ploy for this game - they got a guy to go round dressed in a chicken suit, and entered him into the European Parliament Elections under the 'Alfred Chicken' party banner. This earned lots of attention outside the specialist press (at a time when videogames were being blamed for every societal problem), but surprisingly he didn't win the seat.

Promotional Number

Another (much less elaborate) promotional gimmick used by Mindscape for this game was a toll-free number you could call (1-800-ALFREDC) that would play a recorded message from Alfred himself.
