Description official descriptions

Samorost is a click-and-point adventure game. The player indirectly controls a little gnome who travels to an incoming world about to collide with his home world.

The player moves screen by screen, trying to find a solution to vague puzzles. Interaction is triggered by clicking hot spots. The game has an isolated atmosphere, with eerie music. It is never very clear what needs to be done, but often the player needs to cause a combination of events to keep traveling. Gameplay mixes technological ideas with purely organic structures, in very surreal environments.

Originally released as browser-based flash game, Telltale Games offered the game through their electronic store at the end of October 2006, with a Windows installer that does not require a browser or a flash player installed.

The 2021 version comes with remastered sounds, enhanced graphics, and new music by Floex.

Trivia

1001 Video Games

Samorost appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.

Development

The game was created by Jakub Dvorsky in 2003, while he still was a student at the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design - Department of Graphic Design and Visual Communication in Prague.

Samorost Day

The 18th day of each month is Samorost Day on the popular adventuregamers.com forum. Originally started as a joke, it has become a never ending running gag.

Once upon a time there was this neat little browser game made by Amanita, that everyone liked. And I do mean everyone! Newbies came in here all the time asking has anyone here played this great game - not just occasionally, but so often that the regulars would groan. Sometimes we would play dumb, and sometimes we would openly attack the newbies, saying of course we knew about it. So some forum regular, can't remember who, unfortunately, got the brilliant idea to inaugurate Samarost Day. Now, when still another newbie comes in proclaiming this great little game they've just discovered, we can point to our calendar saying, not only do we KNOW about Samarost, we celebrate it monthly on the 18th. And they all lived happily ever after.

Title

Samorost in Czech means a root or piece of wood which resembles a creature; but it is also a term for a person who doesn't care about the rest of the world. It can also mean in Czech (and other Slavic languages) "something that grows by itself"- "Sam" means "one's self" and "Rost" is the root for "To grow".
