Description official descriptions

The galaxy had been linked together by stargates, allowing minimal travel between two very specific points in the galaxy. However in the late 21st century, the Humans of Earth enter the interstellar community by inventing the hyperspace drive. With the hyperspace drive allowing travel to previously uncolonized planets, a race is on to establish the largest empire and exploit choice minerals.

Galactic Civilizations is a 4X space strategy game where the player controls the human empire on a randomly generated map. The player must first name his civilization and choose a political party. Five other alien civilizations are your opponents: the Altarian Republic, the Yor Collective, the Drengin Empire, the Torian Confederation, and the Arcean Empire as well as a few minor extraterrestrial races.

Starting from a single planet, Earth must send colony ships to choice planets in order to expand it's control as well as explore and make contact with the other alien races. From there, the player must research new technologies, manage the economy, create military, send trade ships to other races, negotiate diplomatically, all while keeping an eye on the political approval rating. As the form of government becomes more democratic, the morale of the planets matters most in who they will elect for the next four years. Keeping control of the senate confers bonuses to the player. Only through successful management can the humans take their place among the galactic civilizations.

If you're looking for the best MOO clone out there - this is it...

The Good

  • Multiple paths to victory.
  • Ability to unlock different technology depending on your alignment: Good, Neutral or Evil.
  • Alignment is determined by random ethical decisions that occur through the game.
  • Alignment affects the look and feel of the game as you go along.
  • Ability to choose a political party that grants advantages and disadvantages.
  • Large online community involved in customising game (NB the game is quite easy to customise too).

  • The Bad

  • The in-game graphics are somewhat primitive.
  • As in MOO and Civ games, micromanagement becomes a nightmare later in the game.
  • Only the ability to play as Humans.
  • Sometimes it feels a bit *too* similar to MOO2.

  • The Bottom Line
If you like MOO2, don't look at MOO3 for a worthy sequel. Instead, seek out Galactic Civilizations. True, it may seem a bit dated compared to modern games out at the moment, but the gameplay is top notch and the game really immerses you, making you really feel like you're the President of Humanity. OK Graphics, good music and good gameplay with some novel approaches to tweaking the Space TBS genre. I give it 7/10.
