Description official descriptions

World War II is at its end but in the years 1945-1947, it becomes obvious that the Soviets are not satisfied with the way Germany has been divided under the victorious Big Four, showing an anxiety over a reunified Germany. They begin to install bureaucratic obstacles to limit the free movement of people and supplies in and out of Berlin, and from the day the the Western Allies introduced the D-Mark as the new currency, the Soviets completely sealed off the Frontier and announced new restrictions.

On June 26th, 1948, the first American planes lifted off from Berlin Tempelhof and other air bases in West Germany to drop supplies in East Berlin. At first everything seemed calm and the Russians only watched every move the Americans made, but on a rainy day in 1949, a Russian air plane crashes into one of the transports. From that moment on, all hell breaks loose and the five year European Conflict begins.

The player participates in an 18 mission long campaign on the American/German side of things with the US Army Lieutenant Douglas Kirkland and the German Freikorps Oberst Hans von Gröbel. As its predecessors, Codename: Panzers - Cold War is a tactical game and the player does not need to bother with resource management. A mission is started with pre-defined armies and more troops can be requested at a conquered helipad, train station, shipyard or road, through investing Prestige Points, which are handed out for completing mission objectives (primary, secondary or hidden ones), as well as by capturing and holding so-called Points of Interest scattered around the map.

The P.O.I. come in form of flags, aid stations, radar stations and such, and grant additional benefits such as healing or repairing player units, or uncovering the Fog of War. But in multiplayer and skirmish matches, a P.O.I. needs to be connected to the HQ in order to be operational. If a P.O.I. in-between gets captured by the enemy, the benefit is lost for the time being.

As in the previous iterations of the series, the player uses Prestige Points to upgrade his units on the field with different weapons and such. In addition, the units gain experience and advance in rank. Depending on the amount of Prestige Points the player has at the end of a mission, he then can choose to take along some of his troops to the next one.
