Description

A rise of anti-mutant activity in Genosha prompts Professor Xavier uses Cerebro to scan the island nation and discovers Apocalypse's presence there. Genosha's government is apparently using Apocalypse to bring their mutant population under control. However, Xavier suspects Apocalypse to follow his own plans and sends five X-Men, Cyclops, Wolverine, Psylocke, Beast and Gambit, to investigate.

X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse combines the gameplay of a side-scrolling brawler like Final Fight with elements of a platformer, that is, players have to fight various enemies and survive the occasional jumping-puzzle. Most levels also feature mid- and end-bosses in form of robots, monsters or known Super-Villains.

Each character has unique abilities and special moves: Cyclops uses his Optic Blast to attack enemies from a distance, Wolverine can climb walls, Psylocke is very agile and the best jumper of the team, Beast can cling to the ceiling while Gambit throws explosive cards at his enemies. Special moves are quite similar to those found in Street Fighter II (Wolverine has a Dragon-Punch-style attack and Gambit's Double Kick is virtually identical to M. Bison's Scissors Kick) and require similar button combinations.

While most stages are unique for each character, some can be played with any of the X-Men. Progress is saved via password.

You think you're tough, bub?

The Good
X-Men Mutant Apocalypse has some of the most gorgeous graphics on the SNES. The characters have shading, detailed figures and some even have flowing hair. These graphics are impressive for the SNES and still hold up nicely.

Mutant Apocalypse also benefits from having plenty of variety to keep you guessing and to keep you going. Players can chose from 5 different X-Men and play the initial 5 missions in any way they see fit. Each mission takes place in vastly different locations with many different (though some repeated) enemy types. Each mission has a mini boss and eventually leads up to a climatic boss battle at the end of every level, providing plenty of challenges to face.

The Bad
Despite some impressive graphics and a lot of variety, X-Men Mutant Apocalypse shows no mercy to any all players and will put any body's gaming skills to the test. Enemies frequently surround players and several of which posses firearms while numerous other guys attack you from all sides. The game also gives limited continues for each mission, and if you fail one mission 3 times its game over.

The game is also much harder when not playing on exhibition mode. In Exhibition mode players can use their X-Man's mutant power by just pressing the X-Button. However, in the actual story mode, the X-Button does nothing and to perform your mutant's power you need to do a special button combo a la Street Fighters (not too surprising given Capcom's roots). This in and of itself is not a problem minus the fact that Bad Guys come after you from every direction, and of course, sometimes the power doesn't work, and when it does it doesn't help matters too much. This leads to frustration and gang up deaths becoming a much too frequent occurrence, and to throw salt in the wound, after completing Mutant Training Mode, Capcom insists you play the "real" mode.

Another unfortunate note is that the game does not contain any multiplayer mode. Gamers will not be able to team up with their friend to take on these enemies, which only makes the experience lonely and even more difficult than it would have been with it.

The Bottom Line
Much like challenging Wolverine to a fight, many may find themselves biting off more they can chew with this title. With its difficulty cranked up to 11 and staying there, X-Men Mutant Apocalypse will put many to the test, and some will not have the patience to keep going onto its many other unique levels.

Also given that the X-Men are a team and work together, it is bizarre that Capcom did not include a two player mode (despite creating several multiplayer games before), and this only makes the difficulty of the game harder and more lonely.
