Description official descriptions

Knights of the Sky is a World War I flight combat sim where you pilot one of 20 different aircraft (each handles differently) as you engage in simple missions or join a full campaign where you will progress through World War I, going on a variety of missions, patrols, and even encounter enemy aces. You can engage balloons and blimps, enemy fighters and bombers, even strafe group targets such as supply trains. If you do really good in the game, one of the enemy aces may drop a note to challenge you to an aerial duel.

A unique feature of the game is the capability of modem link so you can challenge fellow modem owners to dogfights, something that none of its contemporaries had.

Spellings

A good game to learn dogfighting, or even just learning to fly.

The Good
Very playable, you can choose "no enemies" or "unarmed enemies" for practice. There are 2 player options for the ultimate opponent, modem or direct connect w data transfere cable via serial ports. There are also bombing missions, escort missions, even stafeing missions. Large map of trench erea of France. A good image of WW1. You can get into the scenario of a WW1 figter pilot.

The Bad
Unrealistic flight model, especially when flying an Arco DH-2. Behavior of enemy aircraft became predictable. Won't work under a DOS propt in any version of windows, must have DOS 6.22 or earlier.

The Bottom Line
The game to learn dogfighting, but is playable and fun while learning. Skills honed in this game prepare you for other air combat games. A good joystick is a must; you can fly with arrow keys, but you can't stay on the enemies' tail that way.

I haven't been the same since

The Good
Well, I was a amiga boy until the Playstation but this game had me going for years... I mean, fighting WW1 aces. Red Baron? No thanks, I'm still looking for a PC version even now

The Bad
On the Amiga I had nasty slow down

The Bottom Line
Bloody Classic.

Trivia

Cancelled Genesis version

A Genesis version was developed and actually reviewed by GamePro (Nov. 1994, Rating: 2 out of 5), but it was never released.

Title

The game was originally to be called Red Baron, but the company later learned that Sierra/Dynamix already had the rights.

Version differences

  • A second DOS release of Knights of the Sky was made available that contained:
    • General bug fixes
    • Fix for fast 386's and 486's
    • "Friendly" patrols
    • Incremental damage from enemy fire
    • Enhanced IBM sound driver
  • In the Amiga/ST versions of the game you can land your plane and get it completely repaired, but you are not permitted to take on more ammunition.
