The 7th Saga

aka: Elnard, Seventh Saga, The
Moby ID: 6583

Description official descriptions

Your character embarks on a quest to find the seven crystals that are hidden throughout the land of Ticondera. There are seven different characters to choose from, each with different beginning stats and specialties.

The game is presented in a 2.5D perspective, but shifts to an over-the-shoulder semi-3D view when combat initiates. Combat is turn-based, depending on which character you choose, your combat will either be almost entirely melee or magic-based. Potential enemies wandering around the world cannot be seen, however a radar map helps indicate enemies as as white dots.

I wasn't overly excited about it.

The Good
While not being the type of game to blow you away, The 7th Saga did have excellent gameplay, and graphics that were a little bit above average. The battle system took some time to get used to but from then on it was pretty smooth sailing.

The Bad
It was a good thing that the gameplay was so appealing to me or else i would never have kept playing. Where is the compelling story? What about the side quests that we have all come to know and love RPGs for? This game was sorely lacking in the storyline department and it showed.

The Bottom Line
If you have played RPGs for a while then you might not want to pick this one up. Although quite challenging, The 7th Saga just didn't do anything spectacular or new.

Trivia

Version differences

Elnard became a harder game when it was localized as 7th Saga. Stat improvements gained through level ups are more generous in the Japanese original, and there are also differences regarding the amount of gold and experience the player gets from battles. There are various unofficial patches for use with a ROM file of 7th Saga which attempt to correct this and other issues, in order to provide a more balanced and less frustrating experience.
