Description official descriptions

The game is based on the novel UBIK by Philip K. Dick. The player controls the main character from the book, called Joe Chip. He is working for a company called Runciter Associates in Los Angeles (in the year 2019), and his job is to protect companies against industrial spying from other companies. With genetic engineering and the development of replicants both sides have PSI-powers at hand to reach their targets.

In the game you lead, train and equip a squad of selected individuals (with various abilities, be it several kinds of weapon skills or PSI) through 3D-realtime rendered maps, where you sometimes can interact with your environment or even talk to some individuals. Connecting those missions are many rendered cinematic cutscenes.

For better and worse, definitely a Cryo game...

The Good
Based on the Philip K. Dick's homonymous book, this is an appealing game, not only for the license it bears but for the great, stylish looks it seems to have. This is where I felt compelled to buy the game. The first few minutes were exciting, the first FMVs, the menus, the graphics, the concept of the game, it seemed Cryo got it right this time!

The Bad
A few seconds into the first mission and every illusion falls apart. The mechanics of the game are terrible, I daresay unplayable. At least I couldn't play it. The AI of the characters is awful, a few seconds into the game and they already get stuck in weird parts of the scenario, where you didn't send them to in the first place.

The Bottom Line
In a word: Cryo. A great idea, a good concept, stylish visuals but simply unplayable. It seems every Cryo game suffered from this. High hopes, complete disappointment.

Trivia

Some people might already have noticed the similarities between UBIK's setting and story and Blade Runner. This is no coincidence because both games are based on novels by Philip K. Dick.
