Based on the Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance engine, players once again have to fight to stop this new threat in the sixth installment of the fighting series. The standard Arcade, Versus, and Practice modes return, as well as new items to be found in the Krypt. In addition, there are new Konquest Adventure, Chess Kombat, and Puzzle Kombat modes to give the player new mini-games.

There are a dozen Mortal Kombat fighters selectable at the start of the game, including both old favorites and mysterious newcomers. Longtime fans of the series will recognize veterans of the earliest Mortal Kombat games, such as Sub-Zero and Scorpion, Kabal, Baraka, Mileena, Ermac, and Nightwolf, who are joined by relative newcomers like Bo'Rai Cho, who debuted in Deadly Alliance. The game also introduces nine new fighters, Ashrah, Dairou, Darrius, Havik, Hotaru, Kira, Shujinko, Onaga, and Kobra, each with a distinctly new fighting style intended to balance the deadly abilities of the other characters.

The Playstation 2 and Xbox versions offer online, competitive play against other players. The Gamecube version does not include online play, but offers Goro and Shao Kahn as exclusive playable characters.

One of the best Mortal Kombats, if not the best

The Good
Good graphics - although it uses the same engine what Deadly Alliance used 2 years ago, it still looks pretty good, and character models do look better than in the previous game, just simply compare Deadly Alliance Scorpion to Deceptions, and you'll see the difference. Arenas also look cool, and special move effects have been nicely done as well.

Audio is also very good - the scream of characters, the sound of bone and meat crushing - sounds very real and painful - just like it should be, and the arenas also have a great soundtrack in the background.

Gameplay is just awesome. You got cool returning characters from previous games like Mileena, Baraka, Jade, Kabal, Sindel etc. plus some great new additions like Asharh and Havik. The fighting is very entertaining - each character has 2 real life martial arts and 1 weapon in their gear, + 3 or even more wicked special moves, which makes the fighting pretty enjoyable. Also very interesting are the arena based death-traps, which are similar to classic Mortal Kombat's stage fatalities - these give a new tactic to the fighting because players can be kicked in these right in the middle of a battle, that's why they are called death traps. You don't get any type of fights like 2 vs 2 player fights, tournaments or that stuff, but you do get a few new cool bonuses: Puzzle Kombat - a Tetris like mini-game where cartoonish small MK characters beat the hell out of each other to get their blocks in the right place. Chess Kombat - a chess game where each figure is replaced by a MK character, mostly the rules are like in classic chess, but with some fun tweaks of Mortal Kombat. And Konquest Mode, which has returned from the previous game - an entertaining story mode, where you take roll of the main character of the game - Shujinko.

Of course, another great new element in the game is online play, which hasn't been in previous MK's, is now in this game, allowing us to play with people from around the world. The Krypt from Deadly Alliance has also returned, allowing us to use Koins earned in various modes (most is earned in Konquest) to unlock characters, alternate costumes, as well as new arenas, photos, sketches, koncept art, videos, character bios, arena music and many more stuff which you mostly don't need.

The Bad
While the graphics and the visual effects are good, the blood in the game seems too cartoonish, as there are some blood bubbles coming out of characters body when they take damage, also, Konquest Mode has very bad graphics when walking in the free roaming world, but fights in there have normal game graphics.

The Bottom Line
If not the best Mortal Kombat game, this is definitely the best 3D Mortal Kombat game to date, and it will probably be it for a long time, i definitely recommend this not only for MK fans, but also for other fighting game fans and people who like games with a lot of extra content and bonuses in them.

While not the deepest fighting game of its time, Deception is still blast to play and a credit to the Mortal Kombat Franchise.

The Good
You got to hand it to Midway -- these guys know what passes for fun in the gaming industry. And while there are certainly shortcomings to be identified in Mortal Kombat: Deception, no one can deny that this game is genuinely fun to play. The Mortal Kombat series of fighting games have never been as deep or scientific as Namco's Tekken or Capcom's Street Fighter, but MK has always made up the ground by providing a easy-going fighting engine that almost anyone can pick up in a few minutes and grasp the basic with relative ease.

The other major strength of the Mortal Kombat Franchise, specifically in more recent iterations, is the bevvy of features and unlockables present for the player to discover. Specifically, Deception offers 12 fighters right off the bat, with 12 more to unlock (14 if you're playing the GameCube version). Apart from actual fighters, there's a number of unlockable arenas and alternate costumes. Available from the start, there's also three game modes that have nothing to do with the actual game. Puzzle Kombat gives you a head-to-head puzzle game that heavily borrows from Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, but does an excellent job of putting its own spin on the game. There's also a Chess mode that is reminiscent of the old computer / NES game Archon with Mortal Kombat characters filling the role of the playing pieces. Finally, there's a Konquest mode, in which you take control of Shujinko, a student of martial arts, as he embarks on a quest through the many realms of the Mortal Kombat Universe. Along the way, you'll discover many hidden keys and "Koins" which serve to unlock the majority of the game's hidden content. You'll also meet most of the fighters from the game and get an abbreviated tutorial on how to use them in combat. None of the extra modes can really stand on their own, but as a combined product, they serve to add some variety to the title and offer some excellent alternatives to how exactly you choose to waste time with your friends.

The fighting itself is pretty good. The three-style system introduced in Deadly Alliance returns in Deception, and serves to provide a level of depth to each of the 24 characters in the game. Each style is different enough to warrant some practice with your favorite characters, and mastering the timing-heavy style-branching combos is a feat that, although not ridiculously difficult, will require some skill and patience.

Possibly the best new feature in Deception is the addition of newly designed arenas, many of which include interactive elements such as weapons that can be picked up and used on your opponent and death traps that will kill you instantly if you happen to fall (or get pushed) into them. These elements are clearly marked in each stage by ominous glowing red boundaries, and serve to add a level of tactical strategy to the fights, as you and your opponent will vie superior positioning. Some stages also feature multiple levels, meaning you can knock your opponent through walls, floors, or even ceilings to cause extra damage and move the fight to a different locale.



The Bad
Even though there's a laundry list of unlockable content, much of it is pre-production drawings and photos of the design team, which, although are a nice touch, probably won't generate a ton of excitement from most gamers. Also, the fact that the game insists on Auto saving every time you buy a "Koffin" in the Krypt slows down the process of unlocking content, and after a while the process seems like a bit of a chore.

It's not worth much, but the Konquest adventure mode features some of the worst voice-acting I've ever heard, and this is coming from a guy who's played the House of the Dead series. While I understand that Midway is not going to hire top-dollar talent exclusively for a secondary feature in their fighting game, I'd rather just read text and not hear the voices at all than have to suffer through so much poorly-delivered dialogue.

The controls, although generally good, sometimes don't seem to register if you're frantically trying to input the command for a special move or combo. Also, "block" has been assigned by default to R2 on the PS2 controller, which is somewhat unintuitive. Thankfully, the control scheme can be changed in the options menu to fit your needs.



The Bottom Line
Fighting Game fans who are serious about competition and skill might find Deception to be inadequate for filling their needs. There's a lot of variety to be found in this product, but not an incredible amount of depth. However, anyone who knows the gaming industry knows that Midway is great for designing fun multiplayer games, and Deception is no exception. If you're the kind of gamer who prefers to play in the company of others, or just a fan of Mortal Kombat in general, then this game belongs on your shelf.

Trivia

There are a few exclusive features to the Nintendo Gamecube version: Goro and Shao Kahn were added as playable characters, and more fighters are initially unlocked from the start of the game.
