Captain Claw, also called "The Surveyor of the Seven Seas", is an infamous and successful pirate. The feats of Nathaniel Joseph Claw are legendary as is his ability to slip out of situations and find treasure. Frustrated, the Cocker-Spaniard Kingdom issues a gigantic reward of one million gold pieces for the Captain's capture. This attracts legions of bounty hunters to Claw's tail, and eventually he is captured by Captain Le Reux and imprisoned at La Roca. However, even in prison, Claw's luck continues to work, as he stumbles across an old letter from Edward Tobin containing the location of the "Amulet of Nine Lives", a mystical item said to grant near-immortality. Inspired by this new challenge, Captain Claw manages to break out of his prison cell and embarks on a perilous journey.

Claw is a side-scrolling platform game in which the player must complete a linear set of stages, some of which culminate with boss battles. Environments include indoor and outdoor areas - city streets, forest, a large ship, underwater, and others. Each stage has two save points. Claw can move left and right, jump and stab his sword directly in front of him. His offensive arsenal includes, beside the sword, a pistol with expendable ammunition, dynamite bombs, and a special ability called "Magic Claw", which allows the feline hero to hurl projectiles at the enemies. Many hazards await the Captain on his journey, including traps, spikes sticking out from the floor, bottomless pits, and others. Overcoming these hazards often requires the player to time the protagonist's jumps, hop on moving or disappearing platforms, swing on vines and ropes, etc.

Additional power-ups may be found, such as invincibility, the ability to fire projectiles from the sword, and others. Along with power-ups, various treasures are scattered around the levels and can be collected for points, which eventually increase the amount of the player character's lives. The most valuable treasure and power-ups are usually located in places that are hard to access, requiring the player to overcome particularly challenging hazards.

A variety of enemies will seek to defeat Claw and end his quest. Many of them serve the Cocker-Spaniard crown and are, as such, canine warriors of different types. Others inhabit the areas Claw traverses and will usually attack him on sight. Certain enemies, such as most of the dogs, use weapons similar to those wielded by Claw, and will duel him. Boss battles often require figuring out a specific way to defeat the foe and may include puzzle-solving elements.

Animated cartoon-style cutscenes tell the story between levels, setting the stage for Captain Claw's adventure. A level editor is also included, which allows players to create their own levels and import new ones that others have made.

Cute, but way too repetitive and frustrating (51/100).

The Good
The graphics are nice, well drawn and expressive (see screenshots). The cutscenes looked extremely well animated (I have the DVD version of the game, what probably helps a bit). The game has violence but no gore, so the animation seems perfect for a young kid.

Sound is adequate. Voice acting, though sparse, is well done and occasionally funny. Music is very good and sets up that "pirate's mood". I imagine young kids will like to play this a lot, so they can play the same levels over... and over... and over....

In this sense, secret treasures add quite a bit of replay value... but I gave up on them before I even finished the game the first time around.

The Bad
Now, I know this is a platform game, but how many times do I really have to time the same jumps over and over and over and over again? After playing some 5 levels, the graphics and villains were still changing, but the gameplay was the same... And there are 14 levels!

Controls were very bad in my computer for a number of reasons. First, while it is possible to remap the keys, for some reason the JUMP command did not respond promptly when I switched it from the default space bar to the CTRL key. Of course, it took me quite a while to figure this out, get back to the default control scheme, and then get used to keys as the developers had them. Frustrating.

Second, some levels bogged my computer down, specially the last three. By "bogged down", I mean that the frame rate dropped to less than 10 frames per second at many spots. My computer did satisfy system specs: Pentium 233, good graphics card... the same computer I used to play through Unreal without graphic problems. How come this platform game brought it to its knees? Frustrating.

And this is not just an annoying graphics glitch: in a game where TIMING is essential, if the frame rate drops from 20 FPS to 10 FPS in the middle of a jump (as it often happened), dear Captain Claw misses his second jump and falls in a bubbling hot pool of lava. Yes, that happened even if I turned off all sounds and used the smallest window I could. Since you do have a limited number of lives and about 3 saving spots per level, this often meant restarting the game before a number of hard jump sequences. Frustrating.

And, finally, the last few levels are HARD. Maybe that would be ok, but with these flimsy controls and variable game speed, it was absolutely unbearable. Oh, yes: and frustrating.

The Bottom Line
If you are looking for a good platform game that looks pretty, that your kids will like and that you will want to finish, get "Pandemonium" instead. Oh, yes, if you want ANOTHER platform game with cute graphics, that your kids are bound to play over and over again, Claw might be a choice too. And, if you are planning to finish Claw, have at least a Pentium II to do it. Otherwise, be prepared for... frustration.

An action-adventure that will leave you sitting at your PC for hours!

The Good
The graphics are great, the sound effects are incredible, the gameplay is outstanding.

This side-scroller is a pistol shooting, sword fighting, dynamite throwing, magic attacking action fest, with huge levels, hard and easy to defeat enemies, and challenging puzzles, everything an action-filled adventure can be!

You are Captain Claw who must fight his way through prisons, forests, castles, and more to find the amulet of the nine lives.

The Bad
It can get very annoying at times.

My personal rating for this game is 9.5 out of 10, buy this game cause it’s really fun to play!!

No game has ever entertained me like this one has

The Good
An interesting thing about Monolith is that they are a company of extremes. I've never played a "decent" or "average" game made by Monolith. Their games are always either brilliant works of art or complete shockers, there's no middle ground. Claw and Get Medieval (released a few months apart) are typical examples of this. Get Medieval is a tired, repetitive Gauntlet remake that probably could cure insomnia. Claw, on the other hand, is quite possibly the best side-scroller ever made for the PC.

The game is set in a kind of alternate reality in the 17th century, in a world inhabited (and governed) by cats and dogs. The two kingdoms are at war, and an audacious pirate cat named Claw begins raiding dog shipping. His attacks are causing so much damage that the Cocker Spaniard king (whose subjects all talk in outrageous accents) issues a bounty of 1,000,000 gold pieces for Claw's capture, dead or alive. Dead, preferably.

Eventually, Claw's luck runs out. His ship is attacked and scuttled by the king's admiral Le Raux, his crew abandons him, and he himself is captured. He is transported to the feared prison La Roca ("The Rock") to await his death sentence. While trying to find a way out of his cell, he comes across a piece of parchment left behind by one of La Roca's former inmates. The letter speaks of a powerful artifact called the Amulet of Nine Lives, which supposedly grants the wearer with near immortality if all the gems for it are found and assembled. The writer urges whoever finds the letter to search for the amulet, and ends with "...but beware, others now know of the amulet too."

One thing leads to another, and Claw overpowers his guards and escapes. Once outside the prison, he makes a rather predictable decision to begin searching for the amulet and the gems for it. And thus the game begins. The game has a surprisingly good story considering it's a side-scroller, told by over 20 minutes of professionally animated cinematics. The movies alone are superb, it's worth replaying the game just to see them. But gameplay is where the game really shines.

The game combines the addictiveness of Super Mario Bros with the complex puzzles of Prince of Persia. Jumping from platform to platform, climbing ladders, swinging from ropes, battling enemies with sword, pistol, and anachronistic dynamite, there's really nothing new in Claw. But the level of refinement found in this game is what makes it so good. Claw has 14 massive levels to play through, each with its own scenery and enemies. The game should keep the average player busy for a week or more. The game is extremely hard, but not hard because of broken controls like Get Medieval or even because of ridiculously tough enemies like Blood. Instead, it's hard because of interesting puzzles and solid level design. You're not frustrated when you die, but rather you want to replay the level and try again.

You could never praise Claw's graphics on a technical level, but on an artistic level they're superb. The sprites are all hand-drawn, and the result is a game that resembles a cartoon, with graphics that look like they've been painted rather than rendered on the screen. The game makes use of Monolith's advanced parallax side-scrolling engine WAP, and the game is as smooth as silk even at the highest resolution and detail settings.

The game's audio side is also strong. Claw (voiced by Stephan Weyte) has a number of one-liners for every occasion, shooting, running, attacking, and even for when he is left idle and gets bored. "At least bring me something back from the kitchen!" is a classic. Your enemies also have their own repertoire of lines. I particularly liked the town guards on levels 5 and 6, who will quote Shakespear at you as they draw steel and attack. The game's music is catchy and suits the piratish theme perfectly.

In the event that you're looking for additional entertainment out of Claw once you've beaten it, the game has a level editor that can be downloaded from the Claw site. While the editor isn't as user-friendly as it could have been, it's a blast creating your own levels or fiddling with existing ones. Claw has spawned a very active level-editing community, you could be busy for months playing through the hundreds of custom levels that have been made. Side-scrollers traditionally don't have much replay value, and Monolith's decision to include a level editor was probably one of the smartest they made while developing the game.

The Bad
The only big problem with Claw is how it saves your game. You don't get to save whenever you want, rather you have to reach a "Save Point", of which there are two in every level. This sounds rather harmless, except that Claw's levels are massive. Assuming you play faultlessly, negotiating all the obstacles first try, never dying once, it still takes about an hour to complete most levels. What cannot be stressed enough is that Claw is tough as well as long, and two save points doesn't feel like nearly enough. If you die you have to restart at your last save point, and you usually have to march across massive amounts of territory just to get back to where you were.

This whole checkpoint concept in platform games has never really appealed to me. What's wrong with just letting the player save whenever he wants? Does it somehow make the game more fun when the player has to retrace his steps because he died just before the next checkpoint, has to start all over again, and has essentially wasted 20 minutes of gaming time? Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (Claw's main rival) was smarter in this area, and lets the player save at any point. Save points might have been a necessity on the cartridge-based console games of yesteryear, so why do we still have them today?

It's a rather logical assumption that in a platform game each level should be tougher than the one before it. But in Claw, level 2 is harder than level 3. Level 7 is much easier than level 6. The boss of level 6 is extremely difficult while the boss of level 8 is a pushover. The final level is more or less a cakewalk. Just a nitpicky thing that doesn't hugely impact the playability of game but warrants a mention all the same.

The Bottom Line
Claw is a masterpiece. It's addictive and easy to play, but contains a lot more depth than you'd expect in a humble side-scroller. It didn't sell nearly as well as Jazz Jackrabbit 2 did, even though I believe it was better, gameplay-wise. Ah well, c'est l'guerre.

Balance

Due to widespread complaints from parents with young children that the game was too hard, Monolith released the 1.2 Patch, an update that makes the game much easier. Extra lives are awarded per 500,000 points instead of the old million, and the baddies are total pushovers. But the most interesting change was that they included a whole new set of fan-designed levels.

Credits

There are some humorous messages that have been sneaked into the game's credits. It starts off listing all of the game's developers and affiliates, but after a while the game's credits become more and more silly. "Darth Vader" is listed under the "Thanks to..." section, and so are "caffeine", "my car", "the force", "stolen burritos", "more caffeine", "Seattle weather", "toe lint", "loud music", "Burger Master" and at the end "corekt speling".

Special edition

A special edition came with AWE64 that loaded the game sounds and dialogues in to the SoundFont bank.
