Description official descriptions

The third title in the Carmageddon series.

There are three modes of play: "Free Play", which consists of 30 races across 9 different environments; "Campaign", which includes all the races of Free Play mode as well as 25 challenging and individual missions; and "Multiplayer", which features 5 different deathmatch arenas with 7 different network games. The last mode represents the core of the game.

Animated props such as working cranes, lifts, and bridges produce a life-like gaming environment. For the first time, you can customize your car. People in the maps interact with their environment, crossing streets or waiting in front of theatres. The cops are also back again, so watch out!

Technically, the game is up-to-date with graphic and sound rendering technologies at the time of its release, supporting reflections, rain, smoke, shadows, or surround sound, among other things.

Despite better graphics, TDR 2K is a definite disappointment

The Good
The graphical quality took a large step forward with TDR 2K -- flying bits of people can now be seen with unprecedented clarity. You can also injure pedestrians without killing them, (e.g. take their leg clean off) though I miss seeing people explode as they run into my car, as in the first carmageddon.

Unlike the original carmageddon games, TDR 2K has a story line: The world has gone to ruin -- to control the crime, the powers that be sent the unwanted aspects of society (criminals and the poor) into city-prisons and left it to them to hash it out. It is in this situation that you find yourself, with your beauty of a man-slaying vehicle, of course. The designers mixed missions into the old school racing and bashing. If you like solving quests, then TDR 2K may have some appeal to you.

The Bad
I know the designers wanted to come up with some creative new ideas for carmageddon, instead of just rehashing the originals with improved graphics. But I think it was a monumental mistake to add quests/missions to carmageddon. If they want to give it a story line - fine. But I for one don't play carmageddon for the joy of solving missions -- I'm far more interested in destroying cop cars and getting monetary bonuses for artistically running over pedestrians. The time factor is also rather annoying. You only get a negligible time bonus for running over peds, so you have to learn where all the 'time bonus barrels' are or concentrate on smashing the competition instead of innocent people. :(

The Bottom Line
If you don't mind some out-dated graphics, I recommend getting Carmageddon 1 or 2 before trying out TDR 2K.

Wacky explosive chaos but this isn't for you serious race-sim drivers

The Good
Every so often you get a game that breaks the mold and makes a bold thrust at innovation. CARMAGEDDON TDR 2000 is one of those. It's an uncompromisingly violent science-fiction car racing game, set in a post-apocalyptic world of mutated humans, huge prison complexes and insane thrills.

You are MAX DAMAGE, a ruthless criminal imprisoned for life. With its own cities, pedestrians, police and even wildlife the inmates of this multilevel prison are shut in and left to their own devices. In order to escape you must complete a set of death-defying races and missions in each area.

The extensive areas contain vast amounts of detail and potential challenges. Destructible scenery, suicidal A.I traffic and insane A.I opponents make for a chaotic race. Combine these elements with petrol/bomb throwing pedestrians and a car that is easily damaged, you would think you'd be lucky to finish a race at all let alone win one.

The Bad
Unfortunately a major short-coming of CARMAGEDDON TDR 2000 is that it's deceptively easy. You don't have to come first to win the races, you just have to cross the finish inside the time limit. With an instant recovery/repair button and ample time its almost impossible to fail to complete the races. It's a shame because it undermines a race style that's both original and a pleasure to play.

The Bottom Line
With 9 different areas, 48 missions, 50 different vehicles and a fun free-driving mode, CARMAGEDDON TDR 2000 has many hours of potential game-play .

CARMAGEDDON TDR 2000 does have a Multiplayer option but I was unable to find any servers, this is the fate of many games that are forgotten over time.

A mixed bag, but ultimately less fun than the first two.

The Good
Well, finally Carmageddon finds an actual place in the "racing" genre. Ever wondered what those checkpoints were for in the first two Carmageddons? Well now you'll have an excuse to actually "race", because that is what Carmageddon: TDR 2000 is all about.

Where in the first two games, racing was a sort of excuse to get you to run over pedestrians and wreck cars, Carmageddon: TDR 2000 puts a lot of emphasis on racing. In fact, in most cases it's impossible to beat the level without actually racing, because pedestrians and damage to opponents will give you very little time bonuses. But at the same time, to keep the thrill of Carmageddon alive, it's often necesarry to waste a few peds just to make sure you get enough time to make the checkpoint. A high-speed violent race is actually more fun than I thought it'd be.

All the goodies from Carmageddon I and II are here, with some added stuff. New cars which range from your standard destruction-derby car to some really freaky designs, and with the cash you earned from the race you can even buy and pilot them yourself.

All the features from Carmageddon II are here, along with some different multiplayer options. Graphics are much better than the first two, and car physics have been improved. And the sound is infinitely better than Carmageddon II's sound.

Carmageddon: TDR 2000 has an actual storyline, which is quite humerous. It appears the rich have built a wall to keep the poor out, and it's up to you to break through the wall and kill all the rich!

Pedestrian AI is improved. They'll actually run from the cars - and get away sometimes. They'll also be throwing rocks and molotov cocktails at you.

Level design is original and better than the first two, I think.

The Bad
This game wasn't made by the folks who made the first two. In fact, they say it's not even a sequel. More of a Carmageddon 2.5, and it shows. The guys that made TDR 2000 don't seem to understand what made Carmageddon 1 and 2 so great. Nobody cares about racing. If we wanted to race, we'd go get Need For Speed. We enjoyed Carmageddon so much because it was a "race" where you didn't actually race, but instead tore up pedestrians and destroyed your opponents. While racing was an option, it was hardly necesarry. In TDR 2000, racing is a requirement, and it is HARD.

Another thing that's really bad about TDR 2000 are the missions. Yeah. Remember those damned missions every three levels in Carmageddon II? Remember how much those sucked? There's one every other level in TDR 2000, and yes, they're quite hard.

Carmageddon II had such hilarious ways to die. You could literally hit the corner of a wall and cut your car in half. Frustrating as it was to suddenly lose the battle, it was absolutely hilarious to watch. And when you were damaged, it REALLY showed. At first you might just see your tire wobbling, with some difficulty steering, then your car would completely come apart. You'd lose a tire, you may not even be able to drive right, or you'd be stuck in one place entirely unless you repaired. Your car could REALLY get mashed up, and it was hilarious to see. In TDR 2000, the only real way it shows that you're damaged is by the smoke coming out of your car and some broken windows, maybe missing some parts of your frame, and your engine slowed. The contrast in damage detail between the two games is large, and it was disappointing to see such a lack of excitement in getting killed.

There are no peds in multiplayer! I've never multiplayed in Carmageddon 1 or 2, but it seems to me that one of the things people would want most would be pedestrians in multiplayer! Nothing makes a deathmatch more fun than smacking into a pedestrian when you're trying to ram your buddy.

Oh, and one last thing. With such emphasis on racing in this game, it seems stupid and insulting that the opponents don't race at all. They'll follow checkpoints, but they can never win the race. As long as you survive all the laps, you automatically win.

The Bottom Line
If you've never played Carmageddon 1 or 2, and want to play a really, really, really violent racing game, you'll definitely love this. But fans of the first two might think this is a discrace to the series. Stick with 1 or 2 if you have them. They're both equally good, and better than TDR 2000.

Trivia

German version

In the German version all blood and gore is green and people/some animals were replaced with zombies.

Text adventure

TDR 2000 has a text adventure game hidden in the console. Hit tilde (~) to bring up the console, then type "hereComesTrouble" (case sensitive and without quotes) to enable cheats. After that, type "adventure" (again without quotes) to start the game.

The Death Race

In 1999 SCI was planning on releasing TDR 2000 under the title Carmageddon The Death Race 2000, referencing the Roger Corman film Death Race 2000. This was filed as US trademark SN#75788289, but never finalized and was officially abandoned in 2003. Total Destruction Racing was their less infringing alternative reading of "TDR".
