Description official descriptions

The Sega Genesis game based on the Jurassic Park movie/book differs from the games made by Ocean for other platforms. Basically, Sega's Jurassic Park is a side-scrolling action game. You jump from platform to platform, pick up weapons and health items, and try to make it to the end of the level with all your lives intact.

This version of Jurassic Park does feature an interesting twist, however. You can play it either as Dr. Grant, or as a Velociraptor. The story and level design changes based on which character you use.

ROAR! Fear me puny humans!

The Good
The fact that I could play as the Raptor! I mean, come on, armed with teeth, claws and wicked speed. You have all your weaponry right there and don't have to worry about dropping any of it! Also your weapons never run out of "ammo", ever!

Unlike the human, Grant.

It doesn't get much better than that.

You can kill other dinosaurs with your bare teeth and claws! A single kick to the head or neck and that enemy is going down for the count!

The graphics were pretty good but I just wish that the Raptor hadn't been just one color, brown. Bleh. Should have at least given it some markings, something.

The Bad
As mentioned before, the color of the Raptor. Even gray with black markings would have looked good! Music was...half and half here, it had good parts that went well with the level and there were some levels that the music just didn't seem to "fit".

Course, I only made it to about the third level with the Raptor so I didn't get to hear much of the music...without the Game Genie cheat code for level skipping.

That when you killed an enemy, instead of eating it to regain health, it "flashed" away. And the "happen to be there" placed chickens on plates...or whatever they were supposed to be. The first time I saw those I immediately thought them as a lure for a trap and avoided them.

The Bottom Line
Choose either the puny human or the mighty Raptor to be.

As Grant you are fighting to survive in a world dominated by the dinosaurs and your goal is to escape the island! Be careful of the Raptor that hunts you though, he will not allow you to get away easily. Whatever weapons and ammunition you find, collect them and use them wisely. For your greatest challenge is yet to come!

As the Raptor you are tracking the human Grant down and your goal is to stop him from escaping the island. He is your greatest prey to kill, a feast fitted to your skill! The humans use weapons that keep them safe from your wraith, outsmart them and dominate as supreme! Crush those that oppose you and attempt to claim your prize as theirs! Be wary of your prey's trickery though, for he will stop at nothing to escape you.

Could have been better

The Good
Jurassic Park was a huge marketing sensation in the early 1990's. The novel became a block buster film, which in turn help produce all sorts of merchandise, including this video game. Sega has produced a nice looking, side-scrolling, platformer with the option to play as Dr. Grant or a Velociraptor.

The Bad
The graphics and music look and sound a bit unpolished, if not rushed. Playing as the human or dinosaur is fun until you face the sluggish controls and poor hit detection. While the game does offer a password feature, their are no continues and both playable characters seem a bit too weak for the challenges that they face.

The Bottom Line
Jurassic Park for the Sega Genesis is a nice platformer that could have been great. It is not the worst video game based on a film, but it really does not demonstrate the full creativity of Sega or the hardware abilities of the Genesis.
