Description official descriptions

Submarine Titans is a real-time strategy game set in a future Earth where its surface was devastated by the Clark Comet. Remains of humanity have moved to installations at the bottom of the seas, but formed two rival civilizations - the White Sharks, eager to claim power by force, and the Black Octopi, a technologically advanced but ecologically friendlier faction. Not long afterwards, they discover an alien race known only as the Silicons in the depths. All three of the mentioned factions have their own singleplayer campaign of 10 missions each.

The game features multiple innovations to the genre. Firstly, there are five different heights upon which submarines can move, adding a vertical dimension to the gameplay while using a 2D engine. Structures are built on the bottom of these levels, either on the very floor of the sea or on large stone plates. For the human factions, structures are spawned by construction submarines and are then gradually formed independently from those units, while the Silicon use capsules which transform themselves into any structure.

Among a wide variety of standard and specialized submarines, several types stand out: Marauders/Raiders/Usurpers can capture enemy submarines and structures (similarly to Star Trek: Armada), Avengers can disable their targets, and Dreadnoughts launch special pods which damage targets from above. Enemy technologies can be captured by hacking, allowing for potentially optimal submarine combinations. Submarines armed with torpedoes or ion shells require a special building that produces these weapons. Defensive structures share some similarities to this, and are also technologically advanced, some providing shielding to friendly objects in the surrounding area or sending damaging ultrasonic pulses to enemies in their vicinity. Each faction also has weapons of mass destruction similar to Command & Conquer superweapons.

Human factions have access to four resources: oxygen, metal, Corium 276, and gold. Oxygen is required for proper functioning of all base assets (especially construction speed), metal and Corium 276 are mined from their respective deposits, and gold can be extracted from anywhere on the map with varying rates of efficiency. Silicons, on the other hand, can gather only three resources: energy, Corium 276, and silicon. Energy is gathered from metal deposits and fuels friendly objects' hit points and shields, while silicon is gathered from sand and its extractors need to be placed in a moderate distance from each other. All these resources can be converted to gold/energy.

Complex tech trees are unlocked through research, giving access to new submarines, structures and upgrades.

Despite having a 2D engine, the map view can be rotated in 45Β° increments and zoomed in and out. Aside from the standard three levels of artificial intelligence (AI), players can change AI parameters in a special application that comes with the game. The game also comes with a map editor and a sound editor. Maps can also be randomly generated for skirmish and multiplayer matches.

Magical journey into the watery depths

The Good
The biggest thing I liked about this game is the extremely immersive oceanic environment. The moment you start playing Sub Titans, you feel the cool ocean depths close in around you. You really do feel deep in the ocean. Not so deep that everything is black, but deep enough for shifting light patterns to reveal the huge colourful bounty of a mysterious ocean floor. Little corals, fishys, strange anemones - everything oceanic is there in spades. Sub Titans takes you away to a different realm. It is the only sea-going RTS which does this. And it's not like other sub-simulators where you are shut into a dark sub with no outside view. Here you sea the outside of the oceanic vista in all its glory.

The Bad
It is a bit of a ho-hum in terms of RTS strategy. All the usual techniques work. Mass attacks, clever little unit strategies. They put in a good effort and it is very accomplished, but to become an outstanding title you really do need some overarching appeal to the human psyche. Maybe some connection to the lore of Atlantis? However, Sub Titans shouldn't really be faulted on this. The storyline they did create is extremely detailed and polished and the conception of te different races and unit balancing is all most carefully completed. Even down to the little details on each sub or creature.

The Bottom Line
The most unique ocean going RTS experience. You really do need to keep this in your collection because it is the only sub RTS outside which does the undersea experience in a complete fashion. When you need to "escape from reality" and immerse yourself in a bubbling deep watery realm in full colour, then this is the only game which does it.
