Description500 years ago, an ancient and well-respected Shaolin fighting tournament, held every 50 years, was corrupted by an evil and elderly Outworld sorcerer by the name of Shang Tsung, who was accompanied on his behalf by Prince Goro, a 4-armed half-human/half-dragon, who is a General of the Armies of Outworld and a Warrior Prince of the Subterreanean Shokan race, and while knowing that if 10 tournament victories in a row were won by the ever great and grand champion of Outworld, the Earth Realm would then eventually be conquered by the dark forces of evil and as would fall into the terrifying and ambitious hands of darkness, as Shang Tsung had entered and pitted Goro in to the tournament and had him fight and defeat the great legendary Kung Lao, ancestor of the Shaolin warrior monk disciple, Liu Kang, and while ever since, Goro has been reigning supreme as the undefeated fighting champion for about and over 500 years now. While as the last tournament required draws near to a close, Rayden, the Thunder God of Lightning and sworn protector of the Earth Realm, enacts a plan to tip the scales in favor of the humans, as around 7 specially selected fighters step foot and up into the arena in a place which is designated along on Shang Tsung's mysterious remote island which include the Shaolin warrior Liu Kang, US Special Forces operative specialist Sonya Blade, fame-seeking actor Johnny Cage, the mercenary thug and team leader of the Black Dragon Squad Kano, the ice-wielding Lin Kuei ninja warrior Sub-Zero and his main undead adversary Scorpion and also including Rayden himself who has sacrificed his own immortality by transforming into a mortal warrior like all of the others.

Mortal Kombat is a 2D side-scrolling platform-arcade one-against-one versus fighting game in which the fighting here is set as a one-on-one combat, allowing each and every fighter to perform a wide variety of punches, kicks and unique special moves in order to help overcome and defeat their opponents. When the opponent faces their second round loss, the winner can perform or execute a super finishing move called a "Fatality" against on the loser, with which the Fatality is a bloody finishing move that is unique to each and every fighter that graphically ensues and kills the loser in a gory and blood-soaked finale.

Mortal Kombat was also originally brought to life as a 2-player platform arcade-style game title, in which it is also notable for its use of digitized actors upon in representing its game's featured fighters as well as its use of copious amounts of high intense levels of animated violence, suggestive themes and graphic blood content and gore while during gameplay.
