The game effectively connects to game's servers or to some other service where all players are handled. Depending on the game service there could be various multiplayer modes and rooms where players could match, search one another, join groups and play in co-op, free for all, capture the flag or any other multiplayer mode.

Various devices use different online services, but it all boils down to using Internet to connect to that online service and play with other players. Blizzard's PC games use Battle.net, Sony console use PlayStation Network, N-Gage uses N-Gage Arena service, and so on.
