Monumental Games was a game development studio based in Nottingham, UK. It specialised in the design, production, operation and management of large-scale consumer MMO games for the global marketplace. It was established in 2005 by Rik Alexander and Rocco Loscalzo. Both previously worked at Climax Online as game director and technical director respectively. Alexander was the studio's CEO until January 2010, when he stepped down and Nick Wheelwright, previously CEO of Codemasters, replaced him.
Next to the Nottingham studio, Monumental acquired the Manchester division of Swordfish Studios Limited with 26 people in November 2008 after it was closed by Activision. In the same month the opening of a new development division in Pune, India was announced, with the assistance of Quickstart Global. The Manchester team was working on titles for Xbox Kinect and PlayStation Move. In April 2010 however it was confirmed the Manchester studio was closed to focus on more profitable business.
In early January 2012 the main company went into administration and was closed shortly afterwards.
The studio's legacy is the MMO football game Football Superstars (2009), and the Xbox 360 and PS3 racing game MotoGP 09/10 (2010) for Capcom. The MotoGP game was no surprise as the founders previously worked on several MotoGP games for THQ. Their final game Little Horrors was released in 2011, an MMO for children. In 2010 the company is said to have lost the bid to Jagex for a Transformers MMO, which may have prompted some of the initial redundancies in the workforce. Monumental was also working on the hunting simulation Hunter's World. First announced in January 2009, it was in beta at least until 2011, but most likely never officially released.
The company also designed and maintained Monumental Technology Suite (MTS), a MMO game development middleware solution. Later it also released Prime in August 2010, a lite engine for MMO games to be published on Facebook and other web platforms.
