Shanghai PopCap Software is a game development studio based in Shanghai, China. It was opened in January 2008 and it is a division of PopCap Games, Inc. It is led by Asia/Pacific vice president James Gwertzman who relocated to Shanghai. PopCap previously had staff in Korea and Singapore, and a distribution deal with Square Enix, but it is the company's first permanent location in the region. Work at the studio is targeted exclusively at an Asian audience and also includes localizing existing PopCap games.
In May 2011 PopCap announced a partnership with the Chinese social networking site Renren to create a social adaptation of Plants vs. Zombies exclusive to the site, called Plants vs. Zombies: Social Edition. In the same month Spicy Horse announced to create a 3D online game based on one of the PopCap brands, working together with the PopCap Shanghai studio.
