Overview edit · view history

Philos Laboratories Software Developer Ltd. was a development company founded in 1996 in Hungary. The company name was changed to Philos Entertainment Inc. after receiving a large sum from an investment firm in October 2000. Later in the company's history, Philos also offered motion capture services for a short time.

The actual date the company closed its doors is unknown, but it can be surmised that it was in early 2002 since many key development staff and other personnel left Philos to join Mithis Entertainment.

The Official Company Line per the Philos website (July 31, 2001):

Philos Entertainment Inc. was established back in 1997 and since then it has become the largest computer/video game developer in Hungary. The company's first title, a historic real-time strategy game called Theocracy was published by UBI Soft in 2000 (Windows, Linux) and it became a top seller game on Linux. In November, 2000, ABN AMRO invested a capital of 1 million USD in the company, which resulted in a substantial growth in the staff and also a speedy technological progress. At present, Philos Entertainment Inc. has close to 100 colleagues and develops 2 game titles (Escape from Alcatraz, Imperium Galactica 3: Genesis) on the PC and on PS2 simoultaneously in co-operation with noted publishers. Recently Philos purchased the most advanced VICON 8 optical motion capture system in Central Eastern Europe. By choosing the alienbrain Digital Production Management (DPM) software from NxN Philos aims at increasing efficiency in managing its upcoming projects.
