Avalanche Studios was founded by Christofer Sundberg, Linus Blomberg and Viktor Blomberg in 2003. The studio is located in Stockholm, Sweden and currently employs 90 people. It is the trading name of the company Fatalist Development AB.
Avalanche Studios is a privately held development company for independent games. It focuses on original IP or selected high-profile licenses and innovative games technology. In September 2006 the company released its first game, Just Cause. The sequel, Just Cause 2 was released March 2010.
In March 2010, Avalanche Studios announced that they formed a new development studio called Expansive Worlds which will be the casual and online games division with a strong focus on community-driven subscription-based titles. Expansive Worlds develops and publishes theHunter, which was acquired in February 2010 from Emote Games Ltd.
The Avalanche Engine (current version 2.0) is the studios' proprietary engine. The engine is focused on large landscapes with varied climates zones. The engine also features advanced weather effects and day-to-night cycles. The engine is used in Just Cause, Just Cause 2 and theHunter.
