Overview edit · view history

Mistwalker was founded in 2004 by former Square Executive Vice President, Hironobu Sakaguchi, after he was ousted from Square for producing the animated movie, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, which was a box office disaster.

Mistwalker is financially backed by Microsoft Game Studios, who has been trying to capture a greater market share in Japan with their Xbox consoles, which has been a weak point for Microsoft due to a lack of RPGs (a popular genre in Japan) developed for the Xbox consoles.

Mistwalker designs and writes scenarios for RPGs, what Hironobu Sakaguchi is best known for. They outsource the programming and coding of games to other companies.

The company created two Xbox 360 exclusive RPGs for Microsoft, Blue Dragon (2006) and Lost Odyssey (2007). Both were received fairly well. In December 2008 it was announced a third RPG, Cry-On, was cancelled. Half of the scenario had already been written, but a year and a half to two years of additional development was still needed at the time of cancellation.
