Overview
Atlus was a Japanese video game developer and publisher that was founded in April 1986, and is based in Shinjuku, Tokyo. In November 2006, Index Holdings acquired Atlus by buying a majority of its stock.
Their best-known creation is the
Megami Tensei series, one of the largest role-playing franchises in history. The company's mascot is Jack Frost, a popular recurrent demon character from the series. While Megaten has never been as popular as many of its contemporaries, its games are often well received by fans and critics alike, with
Shin Megami Tensei often considered a landmark of the series. Besides Megami Tensei, Atlus is also known for their
Trauma Center series and several stand-alone games in various genres.
The company was dissolved in October 2010 by its parent company Index Holdings. Following a short stint as a brand for games published by
Index Corporation, the name Atlus returned as the new company
Atlus Co., Ltd. owned by
SEGA in April 2014.
