NEC Home Electronics, Ltd.

NEC (acronym of "Nippon Electric Company", 日本電気) is a multinational company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and currently specializing in information technology. NEC was established in 1899 by Kunihiko Iwadare and Takeshiro Maeda, and initially focused on telephones and electric switches. Over the course of its history NEC produced radio technology, cables, satellite communication accessories, and other electronic devices, including early computer systems.

1980's and early 1990's saw NEC at the peak of their power in the realm of video games. In 1981 they released the 8-bit PC-88 computer, followed by the 16-bit PC-98 a year later. After having licensed technology from Hudson Soft, NEC released the PC Engine (TurboGrafx in the US) console in October 1987. It was followed by a CD add-on half a year later. NEC's last console was the PC-FX, released in 1994. Afterwards NEC shifted its focus towards mobile phone products and supercomputers.
