Overview edit · view history
Nokia is a Finnish multinational telecommunications firm, best known for its cell phones like the infamous Nokia 3310. Founded in 1865 as a pulp mill in Tampere, the company diversified and at various points produced a myriad of consumer and industrial goods such as tyres, computers, paper products and other items; Nokia has since spun off its other divisions to focus solely on mobile technologies. The company suffered a period of decline following the popularity of smartphone platforms such as iOS and Android, to which they made a parnership with Microsoft by adopting Windows Phone as the primary smartphone operating system, and culminated in the sale of its devices division to Microsoft, who continued to produce Nokia-branded feature phones and Lumia smartphones under the Nokia and later Microsoft brands; Microsoft has since sold its feature phone business to Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile and HMD Global, a Finnish company headed by veteran Nokia executives. Nokia no longer manufactures devices themselves, instead licensing them to HMD Global.
Nokia's greatest contribution to mobile gaming was their version of Snake, programmed by Taneli Armanto and first released in 1997 on the Nokia 6110. The company also made their attempt at a handheld game console with the N-Gage and the later N-Gage 2.0 service for S60 smartphones, though both received lukewarm reception at best, with the original N-Gage handheld being maligned for its awkward design and high price.
