Overview
Playtronic Industrial Ltda. was
Nintendo's subsidiary in Brazil, from 1993 to 1996. It was a joint venture between
Manufatura de Brinquedos Estrela (an important toy factory in Brazil) and
Gradiente (responsible for, among other electronic products, the official Brazilian Atari 2600 and a Brazilian MSX clone).
Playtronic was the first company in the world to produce Nintendo products outside Japan (as even
Nintendo of America had Japanese products). It has released the NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Virtual Boy and the Nintendo 64. All Playtronic consoles were like the American ones, but with a PAL-M video standard.
Like their local concurrent,
Tec Toy (Brazilian
Sega's subsidiary), they also localized some games, but not to the same extent (of changing character sprites, for instance).
In the end of 1996 (after the Nintendo 64 release), Estrela left the company, and Gradiente went on alone as
Gradiente Entertainment Ltda.Games
