Phil Co graduated from the University of Virginia School of Architecture in 1994 and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area shortly afterwards. He initially wanted to become a rock star, but eventually turned to video game design. He joined Cyclone Studios, where he worked on Requiem: Avenging Angel (1999). He went on to design levels at Infinite Machine, Knowwonder, and Blizzard North before coming to Valve in 2005. He is also the author of the book Level Design for Games.
