Gary was one of the UK's leading videogames journalists from 1985 onwards and in the early 1990s, editing the seminal C64 magazine Zzap!, and the multi-format incarnation of The One, Amiga Power, PC Format, and more. His contribution to making games was initially mostly in manual writing.

Later he left journalism for a career in games development, pioneering new ways to play for such companies as Konami, Rockstar and Denki, where he works in 2007.

In 2007 he won the UK Games Media Legend award. He was also nominated for a Bafta award for Quarrel in 2012.
