Lorien, an avid disciple of Carl Sagan and an early fanatic for electronic music, attended UC Berkeley where he studied astrophysics and ethnomusicology. When the calculus part of physics became too much to bear, Lorien turned his gaze back towards earth and studied physical geography, eventually receiving a B.A. with honors. After school, he decided to do absolutely nothing with his education and embraced the burgeoning techno music movement of the San Francisco Bay Area instead, immediately setting out to make techno music of his own. He released a vinyl 12" as Universal Machine on Sunburn Records. Lorien also became a rave party promoter and engineer, helping to put on hundreds of successful events with his partners in Pacific Sound. During this time, he began to make music and sound effects for software companies including Meta Creations and Shaba Games. Since becomming a full time Shaban in 2001, Lorien has filled the roles of IT manager, web designer, video engineer, and audio engineer, as well as becomming an expert coffee maker.
