After getting his degree from Washington State University, Steven created character animation and multimedia artwork for the business and broadcast industry. His game career began in 1997 at Cavedog Entertainment where he worked on units, props, special effects, and FMV sequences for Total Annihilation and the follow-up TA:The Core Contingency expansion pack. Next, he supervised the FMV sequences for Cavedog's first person action game Amen: The Awakening. Steven joined Gas Powered Games in December 1999 and became GPG's Art Director in April 2001, serving in this capacity for the Dungeon Siege franchise.
