Forums > News > 'Entry helper' now live for Steam, PSN, iOS for all contributors!

Now available to all, the 'entry helper' allows any MobyGames contributor to add a game by linking to its store page (Steam, PSN, iOS) when you go to 'Add New Game'. From there, we grab the release date(s), digital cover, promotional screenshots, developer and publisher where possible, and the 'ad blurb' (store's description of the game.)
Some notes for those using it for the first time:
-The 'entry helper' only works for adding games from scratch. Please try to check quickly to see if the game was released for other platforms & add those too, if you can. (Reminder: please provide the proof URL in the comments on your submission!)
-
If it can't find a precise match for a developer or publisher, the 'entry helper' will leave that field blank. Please type in the name again and if it's not in the DB, you can add it at that stage.
-
For the Steam version, please check SteamDB.info for when the Linux and Mac versions were added, since sometimes this is unclear even on Steam itself.
-
You can skip writing a description (only using the 'entry helper') by clicking past the description field in the New Game Wizard using the vertical navigation links. You can skip writing a description (only using the 'entry helper') by clicking past the description field in the New Game Wizard using the vertical navigation links. [MORE INFO: If you are using the 'Entry Helper' and don't want to write a description, please fill in the first page, hit 'UPDATE' to save it and then click the '3' button above 'Rel Info' to skip that step - don't click 'Next'. Otherwise it doesn't work - sorry for clunky UI.]
-
There's very little you need to add to make a valid entry. (You do not have to write a description, though we'd love you to.) But at the very least, please make sure you fill in some of the basic genre, perspective, and game style tickboxes when adding a game. Ideally, you could also add tech specs too.
That's the basic shape of it. Please feel free to ask questions in the forums, and good luck!

Extra note: here's a Google Doc to potentially co-ordinate which months are being worked on for Steam, PSN, iOS.
But it may be there's so much to work on and it's getting approved so quickly that we won't need it? Another approach on Steam is to use SteamSpy to grab just the Top 100 games for each month, and there's probably a way to do similar for iOS. That might be a better way to do it?
[EDIT: BTW, for initial Android release, if you're adding an Android version, AppBrain seems to have good info!]

Preventing games with identical titles to pending games from being added with this is an upcoming feature.

(Also, it was not a duplicate of a live game, which would be more serious if left undetected, it was someone skipping past an in-progress entry to post theirs first - I've reverted in any case.)

Must have missed this. I thought just a week or so ago you said descriptions are definitely required?
Also what's the issue with Xbox.com?

Simon Carless (1835) on 2/14/2017 1:54 PM · Permalink · Report
Do you mean, why isn't Xbox.com one of the places you can use entry helper at? We just haven't got to it yet...

At least for 360, I've never seen anything else but useless two-sentence blurbs without substance on xbox.com.

Hm, might not be the best, then. Nintendo.com has some OK ones, though, right?

I mean, most 360 titles should be added by now..so we should still add xbox.com for newer titles.

Ah, sorry about that! Can you add your details to the one I put in there? It was just a test add, really... I'm mainly making a big list of missing PSN titles right now.

A bit of improved functionality: now, if you've added a game with this tool, you will simply be able to continue past the description step without any esoteric workarounds. Thank you for your patience while we got this sorted out!

Wow, yeah! We're going to screen out images eventually.

I've got that change ready to go for the next update.

I feel like some of that is just because people don't really care/get round to adding them - we're missing a lot of prominent VR games that are on Steam right now too, I'd love to see someone tackle those. But we might also consider Oculus store scraping - is any of the data better or higher-res than Steam?

Oculus has a fair share of exclusives that aren't on Steam (such as Landfall, which I already have pending because I worked on it myself). I've tried a bunch of Oculus games at work, but I find I have very little time lately to contribute to MobyGames.
