Now that our covers are unwatermarked, there's never been a better time to show off some of the amazing video game cover art scanned by MobyGames members. And that's just what is happening at the MobyGames Twitter feed, which is updated daily with new pics. It's actually doing pretty well, if you look at the number of retweets and favorites for each post.

When we started this, we asked MobyGames Approvers for some cover picks, and now we'd like your help! Please comment on this post and pick some of your favorite cover art on the site, and we'll gradually flow it onto Twitter (and Facebook/Google+, as time permits!)

Let's go old school. There were colorful and really caught your attention on a store shelf, back in the day. This seemed to rank rather high on searches, so maybe taking inspiration from others' discussions?

Actually first match from that forum was for an expansion or rerelease (info) of Tzar which we don't have. And got there while trying to figure out if Royo made covers, as the poster claimed that was his too (not much around here, maybe The Summoning).
And I was wondering that because I knew other "classic" (?) fantasy artists did a fair number, on top of their D&D work. Nicely detailed one by Elmore. And of course Vallejo and Bell did a fair few, recognizably so (1, 2 / 1, 2).

By the way, do you know that none of these can be found if you search by their last name alone? Royo = nothing. Elmore = 2 others. Vallejo = one person with a similar name. Bell = a bunch (though less than I'd expect really), but not her.

Most Atari 2600 cover art is so excellent it's basically better than the games deserve; also all of Epyx's psychedelic neon cover art series are well worth featuring.

I liked several of the old EA record style boxes like Pinball Construction Set and Archon: The Light and the Dark

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
Child of Eden
Xenoblade Chronicles - I may be a bit biased with this one, but it really is a beautiful cover.
Mega Man - If nothing else, it's notable for its unique legacy.
The Dark Eye

Cover artwork by Ken Tiessen (I guess no one knows about him, since I only added the credits/created a MG page for him only hours ago, plus google search doesn't show anything).

Weirdly-shaped game boxes eg. Infocom's Starcross UFO, Prince of Persia 2. Actually I had Suspended and its mask in mind when I hit reply.

Second, my picks would be:

Welcome to the forums! The Elvira II cover is quite good, do you know who the artist was?

Benjamin (1406) on 8/19/2015 7:30 PM · Permalink · Report

I just checked the manual, but there's nobody mentioned beyond the credits already available here on mobygames. There is however a signature on the box, but as it's in the bottom left corner, it's hidden underneath a sticker which I don't dare to remove from my box for not ruining it. All I can make out is "...sley". I've searched for other high-res scans on the net but nothing turned up, so I've just written a mail to Mike Woodroffle & co at Adventure Soft if somebody remembers who the artist was. I'll keep you posted.

That was an easy match then, only one "sley" I could find... Jeff Easley. Can't find the exact image there, but sure seems same style, and one is very very similar in fact.

Thanks Cavalary, that certainly seems like the right person. It seems id software liked his designs as well.

Here, Jeff Easley is credited for the cluebook cover art (presumably same as the box art) over at https://archive.org/stream/questbusters-v9n03/qbusters_v9_n03_djvu.txt

In this PDF version of a magazine scan Jeff Easley is mentioned as an illustrator of Elvira II cover, so you could add him as uncredited if he's not credited already. It was the first entry after googling "Jeff Easley Elvira II cover art" :)
