I noticed we have groups for several genres, including rail shooters and chase shooters. I think the fact we need to use groups for these shows off failures on the part of the genre system, but as long as we are doing it, would anyone mind additional genre groups? The lack of any way to separate first-person shooters from rail-shooters, tank and fighter plane sims and third-person shooters with a look function has bugged me for some time.

In my opinion, if you feel there is a genre that is lacking or hard to search for, by all means go ahead and make a group. Look at it this way: if the genre overhaul ever happens, having a group ready would make corrections much easier. If it doesn't, at least we have the group.

So I need to define the boundaries. Do you guys consider the Elder Scrolls games to be first-person shooters?

Not at all. There's only a select number of spells that are slightly first-person shooter like, but it's only a minor element in the game.

Agreed, Elder Scrolls don't qualify. I'd say games like Deus Ex and System Shock 2 do belong, though.

Even if the shooting is mostly optional?

It's a tough call, indeed. But basic mechanics are very similar. You hold a gun and move a guy through a 3D world from first-person view.
