MSX cover art and boxart from MSX.og

BdR (6050) on Jun 27, 2015

User Avatar
I noticed there are many MSX cover art and boxart missing. That's why I posted a question over at the MSG.org forum, see here. The site admin also pointed to these directories full of cover scans and photos, would anyone here e interested in adding them?

So Msx.org admins are OK with this?

I think it might be best to make an ad-hoc account called msx.org for adding these, so they can be traced.

Those directories are super nice quality! Yeah, if one of you fine folks wants to make a 'MSXorg' account and then upload, we have control over it in case there are any disputes later.

(It's easier now of course because we don't watermark so we're not really changing the images or claiming 'ownership'...)

Good suggestion, I don't have the time but anyone up to the task?

But those covers are all low quality...... in terms of size......? I was thinking now about all those previous lame discussions about cover art images... totally pointless...

And I doubt someone will volunteer to do such a task: spending/wasting time uploading low quality covers and yeah... without receiving the "lovely & precious" points.

I'm cool with doing it unless there's a consensus that they're too low-quality to bother with.

They are low quality indeed. A year ago I was uploading tons of 200 dpi covers and there were obsessed/sad people complaining. One of them even said: "If I were to decide, I would reject all HIS 200 dpi covers." Imagine that! Said by someone who doesn't even upload cover images............................................................................................................................................................................................

Just few random examples (200 dpi):

http://www.mobygames.com/game/snes/jojo-no-kimy-na-bken/cover-art

http://www.mobygames.com/game/snes/gdleen/cover-art

After a certain annoying and lame discussion I started uploading 600 dpi. Examples:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/everquest/cover-art

http://www.mobygames.com/game/final-fantasy-iv-the-complete-collection/cover-art

Nops, I am not "proud" of my scans. Even my baby nephew can scan stuff.

Yeah, I eventually resigned... because of all the judgments. :)

...... and now someone wants to add these crazy MSX covers... Oh life.

I was on mobile and didn't get to look at the directory earlier, but yeah, I see what you mean. A few of them are decent, though, at least from my limited understanding of what makes a good cover scan.

http://www.msxarchive.nl/pub/msx/graphics/jpg/MSX_Game_Covers/Firehawk_-GameArts-.jpg

It's just a matter of having the time and patience to separate the good from the bad, and I've definitely got plenty of time on my hands.

Well, these MSX scans are really old and they are everywhere: http://www.gamefaqs.com/msx/936604-f-1-spirit-the-way-to-formula-1/images/box-81827

Just save the image from GameFAQS then, it is easier. :D

@ℋarmony: Ok go ahead :)

And discussions about dpi, I personally don't really care about 600dpi and what not, I think your examples of 200dpi scans look fine. A while back I also uploaded some coverart and never had any complaints.

A lot of them are perfectly fine for the purposes here, especially keeping the platform and the age in mind, but we do need permission.

I set up the account and submitted a couple covers before remembering to, y'know, actually check whether or not permission's been granted. I'll hold off on anything further until that's been confirmed.

In any case, does anyone know the easiest way to check the dpi? I'm currently saving each file and looking into its properties, but is there any easier way to do it? I'm running Windows 7 if that helps at all.

Set the view mode of the folder you have them in to details, then right click somewhere on the column headers, then you'll probably need to go to More... and select horizontal resolution and vertical resolution from there, and should display what you can see in file details for all of them, and even let you sort by that.

If it's bigger than your screen, it's big enough. You'll never know the actual DPI without knowing the actual size of the package, since DPI means "pixels per inch".

User Avatar
Yes, DPI has nothing to do with the size (dimensions) of the cover. If it's large enough to make out the details, that's sufficient.

All low quality? Did you even look at the files? You can easily find the best ones by sorting on file size, take a look here. Obviously they're not ALL usable, but like ℋarmony also mentioned there's some pretty good scans here. It just takes some time to curate them properly.

For example there's the Chase HQ cover, (see the MSX entry) it's a 5200 x 3052 pixel scan, which would have to be edited/cropped to a front and back cover.

In my view, if we're not going to get anyone scanning these in the next 3-5 years (hint: we're not), it's better to have 200DPI versions than not at all.

I know we were more 'hardcore' in the past, but that's not - in general - the view of current management.

200 dpi was always the minimum standard. Obviously if higher resolution scans came in they should be replaced.

Apparently it is since that is the only cover we have.

Something is always better than nothing I think. As it can always be replaced with a higher resolution scan.

Within reason, of course.

I brought up the 200 dpi rule as it seemed to me Simon was being misinformed that the standards were stricter in the past which clearly isn't true.

Well, you are a nice guy. Unfortunately not all the users think like you. And because of their shitty behaviour (as approvers) this site lost many possibly "prolific" cover art contributors.

So scan it at a decent dpi, replace it. Problem solved! :)

I wouldn't be so sure. If I'm right Rola is adding materials from przygodomania.pl using przygodomania.pl nickname, so someone can take those covers as well, although if there is a permission, using own nick is fine as well - if this will make our database more complete. After all we don't use watermarks anymore and all we do is for a greater good, to keep the gaming history alive without distribution restrictions.

200DPI is optional, not a must. If the cover is clear and writings are readable, it's fine. Better this than nothing. All covers may be replaced.
