Nearing the end of Wizardry 7 now. A while ago I decided that I'd focus on RPGs only, since I like them so much more than other genres, but they do take time and tend to have replay value.

What are your favorite all-time RPGs? Note: no Japanese RPGs, please.

Havenā€™t played that much RPGā€™s but I really liked the first SpellForce and itā€™s expansions and the patched Gothic 3. The last I played was Konung III witch was decent.

Guess I don't like the genre much, because my favorites are heavy outliers -- the Coles' Quest for Glory 1 and 2. Has anyone out there made much headway in Hero-U yet?

OK, guess I need to add Planescape to my list also... and despite their issues, I sure found the KOTORs compelling!

Another case of I love it despite - or perhaps because - it's nothing like a conventional RPG, Sword of Aragon remains near the top of my GOAT list.

Really hard to choose, I really love the genre so much.

Uhm let's think:
Mass Effect 1, 2, 3, Andromeda (with Andromeda being the least fun, and 2 the most)
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls Online - Tamriel Unlimited (least of the ESO games, as it's an MMO)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords
Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age II
Dragon Age: Inquisition
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Fable: The Lost Chapters (and Fable Anniversary)
Fable II
Fable III
Fallout 3
Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout 4
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
South Park: The Stick of Truth

With probably more I'm forgetting :)

Haven't played the following yet, but am planning on it (own all of them except Vampyr):
Risen 3: Titan Lords
Vampyr
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Of Orcs and Men
Game of Thrones
South Park: The Fractured but Whole
Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga
Dragon's Dogma

Oh boy... I'll just list alphabetically, otherwise it'll get even more complicated...

  • Betrayal at Krondor
  • Deus Ex (though I tend to consider it FPS with RPG elements, and due to the FPS aspect and modern / not-too-distant-future setting I may overlook it in favorites lists even in general, but since others included it...)
  • Gothic (2 stumped me with NotR installed, so got probably only halfway through, after several attempts, still say that someday I'll continue, but...)
  • King's Bounty: The Legend (counts, right?)
  • Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven
  • Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark (maybe)
  • Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire
  • Quest for Glory III: Wages of War (maybe)
  • Planescape: Torment (not exactly keen on gameplay, but damn, the writing)
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords
  • Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
  • The Witcher: Enhanced Edition (despite dreading it at the same time, felt like whenever I did one thing I likely messed up three others)

What's with you and this dismissiveness towards jrpgs lately? :)

Skyrim. This one finally converted me into a Bethesda fan. Before I complained about the faults of Elder Scrolls games, but the way how Skyrim tried to do an immersive another world experience better than the previous games in the series just won me over. I think this one is finally the true successor to Ultima series. And some things it does even better.

Planescape: Torment. Just a wonderful immersive experience in a completely alien world. One of the best written games too.

Ultima 5/7. I have to pick one of the Ultima games, but it's hard. 7 really created an immersive interactive world with wonderful characters (it's like a series of short novels about a society that's prospering and in peace, but there's no joy or purpose to life anymore), but it seriously lacks in classic rpg challenge. Ultima 5 does the same, with the limitations of it's experimentation with contemporary technology but also offering challenge. Plus, it too has some insights to make by showing a society where morality equals tyranny.

Baldur's Gate 2. Is just a great game and definitely a peak moment for the entire genre. It's like the perfect western rpg.

Betrayal at Krondor. I played this recently and was surprised by just how good and fun it is.

No Obsidian games, though I love those guys. I just don't think they have yet created a true classic. Maybe Fallout: New Vegas comes closest.

Hey Josh, long time no talk :)) Yeah, I've lost my interest in JRPGs. They just have no replay value. Even the best of them in that respect, like Final Fantasy V, suddenly mean less after I've discovered Might and Magic and Wizardry.

And the dreadful random battles... Oh no...

Funny, imo those games and jrpg's are not that different. :)

I've definitely seen that wizardry look and feel mimicked in some japanese games.

I'll just mention RPGs I still consider playing again. Just because I stopped being an RPG fanboi with all the junk action/adventure graphic heavy RPG posers they make today, made me oh, so bitter.

Oldies:
Dragon Wars (1990)
Tunnels & Trolls: Crusaders of Khazan (1990)
The Dark Heart of Uukrul (1990)
Betrayal at Krondor (1993)
Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos (1993)
Realms of Arkania: Star Trail (1994)

Hmm. Looks like 1990 was my golden age of RPGs.

Modern:
Fable: The Lost Chapters (2005)
Fallout 3 (2008)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)

Haven't noticed anything worth playing after 2011, it seems.

Indie:
Unreal World (1992)
Slaves to Armok: God of Blood - Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress (2006). A strategy game. Though ironically, everything I ever wanted in an RPG game is in this game...and not in any RPG I've ever come across.

So cool seeing you got back to games... it's back-and-forth cycle, can't really stop being a gamer :)

While RPGs aren't my favorite genre, I was lucky to play some really awesome ones... those that stayed in memory are:

1st-person:

  • Lands of Lore trilogy
  • Deus Ex trilogy -- fourth one is crap

3rd-person:

  • Dragon Age: Origins -- only the first game in the series, others are, meh
  • Mass Effect trilogy -- fourth one isn't bad, but isn't that good either
  • King's Bounty series -- totally not you thing, but so much love them over HoMM, ever since the original KB game
  • Anachronox
  • Of Orcs and Men

Action-RPGs:

  • Diablo trilogy
  • Nox

I loved Oblivion when it came out, but a few years ago I played it again. Boy, did it age poorly.

As of last year I've been starting to get more into RPGs and JRPGs. One of my all-time favorite games has been Fallout: New Vegas.

More recently, I've been investing a lot of time into Persona 5. I absolutely adore it. After I finish that one I wanna get into Persona 4.
