Ok, I've browsed and searched and am stuck... I love space 4x games and am in desperate need of something I've not yet played. I'd love to see something similar to Hegemonia, which is the latest game I've played for space 4x games. Now that it's completed, I really want something new.

Here are ones I can think of that I've played (so don't suggest these):

Imperium Galactica series
Space Empire series
Space Rangers series
MOO series
Galactic Civilizations series
Stars!
Reach for the Stars (new version)
Infinite Space series
Homeworld series

I know I've done others, but that's what I can think of right now. I know, I know... I've done the major games and there probably aren't any good ones that I've missed. But, I do miss games sometimes and I'm hoping there is some gem out there that I did miss. Note that I really don't think I'll want to play anything pre-1998 unless it is superb.

I don't know what you mean by space 4x, but spacey games I like include Nexus: The Jupiter Incident (though that may count as Imperium Galactica) and Weird Worlds.

Weird Worlds is in the Infinite Space series and yes, I've done Nexus and had considered it part of the IG series, though perhaps I shouldn't have as it's not really the same type of game.

Ok, for a 4X explanation...

1) You need the four X's... eXpand, eXplore, eXploit, eXterminate
2) You need to be able to research technologies to help with the 4 X's (new ship types, weapons, armors, defenses, morale improvements, etc)
3) It needs to be space-based for the most part (though planet/moon action can be included)

Btw, I've also done Ascendancy. I forgot to list that before. I also didn't list Hegemonia in my list of games... I only listed it in the request for help. I've obviously played that as well.

I dunno, but it seems like you've created a list of games I want to play. Say this would make a good game group :)

Have you heard of Sword of the Stars? Not released yet, but it should be soon. No idea if it's any good though.

FYI - The demo of this is now available on FilePlanet. The full game should be out Aug 22.

Transcendance doesn't really fit the 4X genre. You don't have a civilization that you're trying to expand. The other one, I'll look into.

Btw, I've created a 4X game group that should be approved in the next 24 hours. Feel free to take a look at it. I'm basically looking for something not on that list.

Sweet. Too bad you can't subscribe to a game group and know when a new one has been added.

Finding a good game...hmm, I haven't looked at the Internet for games, but previously I have looked after good old games at large toy shops or similar. Alas, I have given up the search now, for finding a good game these days is a rare event.

I really wish we had a thread where Mobyusers could recommend the latest games AFTER they've played it for several hours. I haven't played a new PC games in 2-3 months.

Heh... 4x games have never really been my sorta thing... but I did have Space randers 2 recommended to me (http://www.spacerangers2.com/) I don't know if you've tried it or if its even really what you'd define as 4x... but I think it posses some of the same qualities.

Let me know what you think.

EDIT : did you ever get around to trying the Hegemonia addon ? I never really herd much about it and there was a wide gap between the time I beat the original and when the addon came out, so I never got to play it.

Space Rangers 2 isn't a 4X game (though I did mention it in the original post), but it is a really fun game. The DVD comes with the first game as well. They are different, yet similar, games and both are fun to play.

The Hegemonia addon is multiplayer-only. It has no affect on single player except perhaps bug fixes (and I didn't encounter any bugs when beating Hegemonia). And, since I don't play many games online, I never bothered with it.

About the only thing I play online right now is WoW and I'm playing a 17day trial of City of Villains as well. City of Villains is fun, but not worth the monthly fee, so I won't play it after the trial is up. WoW is worth the fee imo, so I'll be playing that for a long time to come... especially when the expansion comes out.

How about more rare games, like 'Alpha Storm' (found on MG), which seems to be totally unheard of.

user avatar

Riamus (8480) on 8/14/2006 4:40 AM · Permalink · Report

That could be a good game, but it's definitely not a 4X game.

Games with publishers tend to get more press than games without one :). Looks like fun though.

This does look good. Where did you find it?

user avatar

Dae (7182) on 8/16/2006 12:29 AM · Permalink · Report

My friend had a copy years ago, but he sold it afterwards. I wish I could find more publisher and developer details somewhere. Perhaps I just need to find a copy of the game somewhere.

How about Space Interceptor : Project Freedom, I'm quite diggin' it at the moment. Heavier on space combat but still quite immersing.

Could be good, but it's not a 4X game. :)

Hahah! :)

I do appreciate the suggestions from you and others. I was just trying to find a specific genre of games (4X) rather than just space games.

You try Sword of the Stars yet?

user avatar

Riamus (8480) on 9/4/2006 2:25 AM · Permalink · Report

Yeah. I didn't really like it. Controls and battles were annoying.

Kabushi (261204) on 9/15/2006 10:19 PM · edited · Permalink · Report

How about the MMORTS Time of Defiance.

It definitely has everything to be a 4x game. There's a seven day trial availabe. I suggest you try it out.

Sounds like it is, but is there exploration? Anyhow, I think I'll pass as I don't want to pay another monthly fee on top of WoW right now. But it does look like it could be promissing. Thanks for the tip.

how about o.r.b. ?

user avatar

Riamus (8480) on 10/2/2006 1:25 PM · Permalink · Report

Yeah, I've been playing that off and on. I'm still not sure that I'd classify it as a 4X game, though. It's not a bad game, but it's rather frustrating at times.

Riamus (8480) on 10/4/2006 1:17 AM · Permalink · Report

Lol. There is a 3X genre that isn't XXX. Though it is really a little used genre title. Most people either use 4X or just call it strategy.
