Video Game Critic, The (A) (100%)

Turbo was designed for the special Steering Wheel controller, and this works very well, but the graphics really steal the show. The roadside scenery includes buildings (orange and green - yuck!), trees, tunnels, snow, a cliff, and a beach. There are even a few hills that you never quite reach the top of. The scenery changes abruptly between stages, which looks a bit sloppy, but this is 1982 we're talking about. The cars are small though multi-colored, and if you look close enough you can see their tiny tires spinning. Turbo was one of those special Colecovision games that elevated the system above its competitors.

Turbo, the current "winner" in the video racing circuit, is included in Coleco's Expansion Module #2 - a plug-in steering wheel and foot-operated accelerator pedal. This is a fast-paced driving test that allows you 99 seconds to pass as many cars as possible.

Turbo is a brilliant racing game for the Colecovision and one that has aged incredibly well. While it does require the Expansion Module #2 it's definitely worth purchasing the add-on as it's an experience you cannot fully enjoy via an emulator.

Das Spiel ist hinsichtlich der Grafiken, die sehr vielgestaltig sind, eindrucksvoll wenn auch etwas „wild“! Eine Zumutung jedoch ist das stets gleichbleibende monotone, „nervige“ Geräusch, das man nach wenigen Sekunden bereits mit Hilfe des fernseheigenen Lautstärkereglers abschalten bzw. erheblich im Volumen reduzieren wird.

Turbo is a topnotch racing title and well worth the additional cost of the driving module. It's also as good a translation as you could expect of such a sophisticated and graphically rich Arcade game.

Electronic Fun with Computers & Games (3 out of 4) (75%)

Make no mistake — Coleco games, though incredibly accurate translations, are not identical to the arcade games they imitate. In Sega's Turbo, the arcade game is louder than the home game, the colors more brilliant and the scenes change more often. Plus, the arcade game is much harder than the Coleco cartridge. A 15,000 point scorer in the arcades can expect to hit 50,000 in his living room. This is not to say home Turbo isn't good. In fact, it's terrific — just different.
